Upside down or right side up?

The proper way of course. Right side up...particularly with crystal that may be prone to chipping.

Water glasses - upside down.

Stemware - right side up because they are most often designed to be bottom-heavy with a wider base--- designed to stay upright. It takes very little to knock one over when it's upside down.

I alternate upright and upside down, as this takes up less space in the cabinet. However, one is correct regarding stemware, especially chrystal, being prone to chipping.

Vannie stores his upright so his teeth don’t fall out.

I also alternate mine so there’s more room. I don’t have much extra storage space.

Upside down. Keeps out the dust or whatever. Besides, that's how my Mommy did it.
Stuff in the china cabinet right side up. We almost never use that stuff and most it ought to go away on my terms.

BTW;

I tried using one of those stick racks like you see in pubs, where stemware hangs upside down over the counter/bar. The glasses seemed to get banged around more, and they collected dust and cooking grease/smoke, and had to be washed before I could use them.

An experiment that didn't work out too well.

There's barely any dust in a kitchen cabinet, unless that's where you raise your chinchillas.

That probably depends on how often you open the cabinet door and reach around in there. And, maybe on how much cat hair is floating about the kitchen.:)

I think I have read that [on average] about 80% of house dust is little flakes of shed human skin. Don't know how true that is.

Anyway, maybe you are removing the dust from your cabinet when you use your drinking glasses.:)

Stemware in a closed cabinet, up.

Tumblers, water glasses, iced teas, and mugs, down. I think I chose that because they are more stable, especially if stacked, and nothing gets in them.

My glass cupboard has most things stored upside down. I'd guess that perhaps 80% of the glasses in there haven't been touched for several years. My best glasses are kept separately in the boxes they came in and are washed and replaced after use.
