Hullo!

The basic story is this: a few friend and I were shopping in the mall, when some of the brilliant locals started screaming at us from across the alley. They shouted the usual stuff: 'Fairy, homo, ect...' Dropped a double F. Holding onto our class, we just rode on down the hallway. When we turned the corner, they all stopped and looked at me.

I wasn't offended, I didn't know if I SHOULD be offended? I mean do those derogatory words even apply to me? I'm Bisexual so the meaning of the insult isn't 100% clear to me when someone attempts to harass me. I mean, they obviously were harassing me as a 'gay' person even though, I don't identify myself as gay. Oh, jolly fun... Should I act hurt to pacify them, or ask them if they even have a bloody clue?

uhhhhh yeah i'd say it would apply to you still even though your only half gay

I had a debate with the guy i work with tonight about bisexuality.. he thinks bisexuals are gay and nothing but gay even if they sleep with women because the sleep with men too and only gays sleep with men over and over.. so I argued that with his reasoning they could also just be called straight because they sleep with women.. and he argued that it was gay because they started str8 and went gay.. and the i got into a huge argument about how they didn't start str8 and we got into a debate about nurture vs nature... I won...

Victory for our resident Ninja!! :=D::=D:

Just don't bother with htem. They just want an audience.

i honestly never understood why some of the names are meant to be offensive anyway
i am british so to me faggots are a food, fairies are mythical creatures that grant wishes etc...
even other names dont seem hugely offensive, my best friend is gay and a guy in his art class was giving him grief for it, shouted "cocksucker" at him across the class.......isnt that just stating the obvious? LMAO

i dont use the words to describe anyone because it seems so pointless, does it make me a bad person that i dont think its offensive?

Arguing with someone who even would judge a person for being homosexual is a losing battle. They are obviously damaged and / or stupid. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in numbers. Ignore them and take the high road. They aren't worth your time or blood.

What would I say?

"Excuse me...but I don't scream white trash (or other insult) every time I see you. Don't you think it's rude to call him a fairy?"

Should you be offended? Of course. Whether you're gay or not, he's just spreading hate.

I think there is a distinction here:

Should you be offended? Well, probably. I'm bi, have many friends on both sides of the road and a few with me in the median. Most anyone I hang around would consider it offensive and intolerant.

Should you be hurt? Nope. You choose to be offended, but you have to allow people to emotionally hurt you. I don't permit anyone with a 2 digit IQ and a penchant for anti-social labels sufficient influence in my life to hurt me.

Now THAT was funny! Should you be offended? of course not. Just consider the source. These same people probably think that Rush Limbaugh is righteous and a good American.

I'm not sure I get the whole picture; how exactly did they look at you? Did they seem expectant? Concerned? Angry?
How many of your friends there were straight? If the answer is "(almost) all of them," then you were the most obvious target of those words, even if they are technically inaccurate. It would be natural to look to you to see how you took it. If the answer is "(almost) none of them" then perhaps they expected you to show a little more outrage on their behalf.

They're not necessarily clueless, you know. For example, if I have a friend of Japanese descent, and someone goes off in our general direction about the Chinese, I'm not going to assume my friend isn't offended just because the aggressor mid-identified her nationality. In fact that might be all the more reason to be offended. And the fact that the other idiot's tirade didn't directly refer to me doesn't keep me from being offended by the mentality behind it.

Some clarifications:

I was with about five or six friends, just ratting around the mall. Taking myself from the group -- they are all straight, although I do wonder about the women, but that's another issue...

My friends had given me a look that basically described my thoughts perfectly: 'Does that even apply to you?' I gave them a shrug, and we just walked on. The topic came up a few times after, but we never really came to any one conclusion.

I basically maintain this: If it didn't bother me then, why make it bother me now?

But I still couldn't banish my curiousity and thought that maybe the insult didn't even apply to me... that's why I posted this, just a passing thought. I still have that new car smell, so I'm not exactly sure whats what.

PS: Thank you for all the responces. ..|

Just tell them that last night you fucked their girlfriends, the night before that, their mothers, who were much better than their girlfriends, and the night before that, their fathers, who were better than their mothers...
