I've been curious how this could happen. This came back as 'undeliverable', but how? I didn't send it. (That is my Yahoo Email address under that red line.)

anybody can fake the sender of an e-mail. if it is not deliverable the server will return it to the fake sender - you.

So, it's like they came across my addy and just 'borrowed' it? If they're spamming, would that make me responsible for it?

if you would look at the message headers you would probably see from where it was sent originally. most people dealing with spam do know how easy a mail can be faked, and will never take a sender for granted. sometimes the receiver of course is not that understanding ;)
they most likely got your address from the web, from some other person's infected computer (where the malware had a look at their outlook address book, or from one of those nice mails written to 2477 people at the same time, and forwarded a few times every time including more addresses - that's just heaven for spammers collecting them).

Ah, so even though it's faked, the authorities can tell that I didn't send it.

Thanks. (*8*)

There are also computer viruses that are designed to send e-mails out from your e-mail account mainly as nuisances. Is the addressee in your address book? If so, run a full virus scan on your computer.

A co-worker had that happen with his work email; he was literally getting HUNDREDS of returned emails for "spam" from servers all over Europe. Yet his PC wasn't sending any of them. I figured someone grabbed his address and spoofed it or something like that.

With Yahoo, unless you stupidly download an infected attachment, can you even catch a virus from Yahoo mail? I mean, your computer doesn't download the mail to open it, does it?

(My spam generally gets directed automatically to a 'Spam' folder and is deleted from there without even being seen.)

If yahoo displays html mails per default as html and you are using IE or an old version of another browser it is possible that you can get infected without downloading an attachment, just by opening. i don't know yahoo mail, but most modern webmailers nowadays offer you a button to rennder the html in a mail and don't do it right from the start.
