The 10% number is trotted out frequently. I believe it originally comes from Kinsey's work, which while groundbreaking at the time apparently had some flaws.

The number of adults who identify as gay when asked in a general survey is between 2 and 5% though. Here's an article that talks some more about different studies that have been done.

ok pulled this out of my psych book... based on national survey (janus & janus, 1993)
men: heterosexual 91% , homosexual 4% , bisexual 5%
women: hetero 95%, homo 2%, bi 3%

That sounds about right. PLUS, there are at least as many closeted gay men who identify themselves as "straight" as there are openly gay men (and probably many more). Which mean that the 10% figure is probably closer to the truth than the 2-3% figure currently bandied about. Of course, I'm just going by my own limited personal experience, nothing scientific.

If you live in the real world and like facts, it's 7%.

I reckon it's about 1 in 1,000 here in Bristol - except for late-night shopping at IKEA, of course; there it's about 50/50 gay couples and straight couples frantically shopping for badly made shite.

Well, even the gloryholes in Cardiff's IKEA are finished off with a faux-pine dedo effect - how gay is that??
