How real is the threat of attacks?

Everybody can be attacked at anytime. I don't go to bars or nightclubs because those types of places are prone to fights (and also I'm not into drinking and clubbing). The only time I go to bars is when it's a special occasion like my mate's birthday or going away outing. Even then, the likely venue would be places that have a neat dress code.

Re: Hypothetical?

Dear,

I don't know how it works in the UK exactly (shades of Tony Martin), but in America, if someone attacks you, you have the right to defend yourself.

Well in the UK you can go to jail for using a weapon on someone. Sorry to go off topic, but a quick story.
Two 20 somethings broke into this farmers house, the farmer shot at them with a shotgun and killed one. The farmer despite defending his own home still went to jail for manslaughter. Not sure on the legal situation with regards to weapons in the US, but I'm sure that if you were to shoot someone (or stab them) and cause serious harm that if taken to court you could have your millitary training thrown back at you (as someone trained in the millitary you should have been able to defend youself without having to do the damage you did type thing).
In the UK you do have the right to defend yourself, but using weapons is probably a big no no!

Like I said keep safe, plan your night out and try and spend it with friends so you're not alone and youll be fine!

yeah, men love it when they find out you have a gun to shoot them with should you decide they're up to no good.

I'm sorry, and I'm trying to be nice, but this is just lame.

I've been going to gay bars for 20 years and I don't think I've ever heard of a gay "hunter" who lures people from gay bars to beat them up.

I've WORKED in a bar when I was in my early 20s and I never once saw a fight in a gay bar. Ever.

Your family is buying into the rather idiotic stereotype that gay people are violent or all die in violent ways. Going to a bar can't get you hurt, although I've always said that it's not the best idea to leave a bar with someone you don't know.

But MAN some people seem to intentionally try to make it hard for themselves.

Trying to balance vigilance and paranoia isn't easy. The threats can be very real, but it really depends on where you live, and the way you're perceived by others (sad but true). Sometimes people will just say nasty things but it will never escalate into violence, but I'm inherently distrustful of people in general so I always think the worst of strangers. I guess I shouldn't really be giving you any advice on this topic.

I've seen a fight in a gay bar (R Place in Seattle) before, but the place is increasingly mixed gay/straight and seems to be going down hill. My friends and I couldn't believe when a fight broke out on the dance floor!
