My desktop used to be connected through a wired connection but I don't know where I put the wire. Is it possible to make a wireless connection.

Confused. You don't know where you put the wire? What does that mean? You don't know where to plug it in? Should be obvious; there is only socket that it will fit? You lost the cable? Go get a new cable; they're ridiculously cheap. You don't have service or a modem anymore? Well then, you can't make a wireless connection either. Don't know exactly what you're talking about.

I plugged the Ethernet cable into the desktop and it would not pick up a connection.

Reboot the modem. (Turn it off and unplug it for 20 seconds then plug it back in. Wait a couple minutes for it to fire up and your pc to connect to it.)
