I have a Dell and a Compaq. Both are good solid computers. I would personally do the following: determine my budget, then look to see which laptop offers the most "bang" for the buck. Also check to see what offers are available -free shipping, free upgrades, student discount, etc. This way you get a computer that offers you (most) everything you want in one.

mikey

Dells have treated my friends well, and that's what I'd recommend in your case. HP's have not. Me, I have a ThinkPad.

Colleges and Universities often have sizeable student discounts set up with some manufacturers. See what you can come up with there.

Don't get an HP. I have 2 friends that had Dell laptops and had nothing but trouble, (maybe a Monday or Friday assembly?)I have had 2 Gateway laptops, I bought one for my best friend and my Mom got another one of mine, never any problems.

I use a Toshiba Tablet at work and its very reliable. I use it very heavily. 8 - 9 hours a day. I have had it in for some screen problems, but that was after 3 years of tapping on it over and over again.

I have Dell desktops at work also and they have held up well. Their warranty service is good.

noelie,
Congrats! I didn't think your dell would last long enough to pass 2000.

Well I have a friend (just one) who has a Dell laptop (I think I've mentioned this before) and he has done nothing but abuse it. It gets thrown in the boot of his car (that's the trunk in American) and he digs it out from all the other crap under the passenger seat on a regular basis and has had no problems with it in three years - no reinstall nothing. Go figure eh!?!

No one congratulated me on passing my 2000th post sniff weep sniffle
CONGRATS ON 2000 POSTS NEOLIE!

I have had a Dell laptop for 3 years. Last month, my hard drive and video card developed issues. I called them at 2am Saturday. On Monday I had a new hard drive; Tuesday, the box arrived to send the laptop back to Dell; I got it back on Friday. No charge--after 3 years, with no extended warranty. They have my loyalty now.

avoid HP. they should only make printers.

My advice would be to determine your budget and what will you use the computer for. Most colleges do offer free Microsoft software (i.e. Office 2007) to students. Check with your school first, because that could save you hundreds (on car insurance by switching to geico. lol j/k :)) on buying your laptop.
My only real recommendation would be to buy an external harddrive and a thumb/usb drive. Definately the thumb drive for printing.

This post just goes to show that there are good & bad in everything made.

No, avoid HP printers as well. I foolishly decided to replace my 3 y/o Epson because of a clogged head (from lack of use). This HP all in one is slow, the colour is horrible, the paper stack is small and you need female fingers to install the ink cartridges.

Most college book stores offer university pricing on Mac hardware and software except for those schools that took Gates offer to replace Macs with new loaded PC's for free on the condition that they no longer carry Mac.

And noelie your avatar is in poor taste. How would you like it if my avatar was cutting the head off a noelie. Actually I investigated it but the dictionary couldn't find noelie and offered the substitute *doily* instead:p

umm why are you so offended it is clearly a lamb and not a sheep #-o

and if you want to buy education macs then you can if you enter the shop through their education site its hard to find your way in

or you can click here

or here

I love my avatar - it makes me laugh every time I see it. But just for you I'll try to find one of a Mac being blown up (or being used as a doily).

I'm sure you will find something like that. It reminds me of the day the Xbox shipped. Some dudes waited in line to get one and promptly went to the parking lot as the line-up watched and smashed it into a million pieces. Poor thing never got to show its 3 red LED's:rolleyes:

^ok ignore his Apple rant (at least Sheep didn't bash anyone) and go for a Dell. I have a Acer personally, but I have only heard good things about Dell computers, and you can customize it completely to your needs. You can get exactly what you want and need on your computer by calling their computer center and talking to a Dell rep. Through him/her, you can customize it completely.

Also, to avoid spam, simply get Firefox. I use it, and havent seen a pop up in years. Lol, I forgot about popups till I had to use IE one day and they came out of the woodwork.

If you are a graphic design student, your college probably will force you to buy a Mac. If you study anything else, like technical things, any Windows/Linux laptop will do.

Anyway, as it was mentioned you should be able to get a discount if the college offers to buy the laptop through them.

This HP all in one is slow, the colour is horrible, the paper stack is small and you need female fingers to install the ink cartridges.
I don't have hardware problems with my HP all-in-one thing, but it bothers me that they want us to install 500MB of drivers and useless image editing software.

Edit: If you go for a Windows/Linux one, get one with a Core 2 Duo CPU, don't go for the cheap offers with Pentium M etc, the shops just want to get rid of them because they are a thing of the past; and if you plan to get a Windows Vista one, get at least 2MB RAM.
