This is a little cautionary morality tale.

I was acquainted with Peter Grant and his family all those years ago and my work brought me into an overlap with his sphere of influence. Unlike his private Frog's Breath golf course, this project smacked of a cocaine fueled fever dream during the entire time I watched it go from shovels in the ground to the last silent days as it fell into stillness.

I was never very impressed. I admired his sister and the role his family played in the fortunes of Northern Ontario...but we never really connected because I found him and his idea of himself puffed up and false...even having to stand up to him on a couple of occasions. I assume he's dead by now.

I love that this captures the emptiness of the intent and the 'design'. This is when jumped up arrivistes start to think they are Hearst.

I am not sure if anyone here knows that Haileybury was the home of the writer of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mystery books.

This would have been right up his alley.

Yes...for those in Britainistan, it must be disconcerting that the colonies have the same place names...but close to Haileybury and the Franklin W. Dixon heartland, Cobalt Ontario produced an absolute fortune for the colony that later realized it was indifferent to the claxon calls of the Battenburg/Mountbatten dynasty but still love the Commonwealth because it keeps us from descending into the shithole populist republic that the US finds itself prey to.

I've never heard of Peter Grant before. His "mansion" looks like some sort of nuclear installation.

The only Haileybury I know is the English public (ie private) school: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haileybury_and_Imperial_Service_College

I haven't heard of him either and agree the 'mansion' is horrendous, cold and sterile

Not disconcerting at all, just confirmation that our culture traveled well :gogirl:
