It smacks of cultural imperialism. The USA is the most powerful country in the world, so it wants to impose all aspects of it's power on the rest of the world.

It's tried to do this with sport, and failed completely: American football, baseball and basketball -the three major sports in the USA - are minor sports on the world stage.

American spelling is, similarly, not used in English-speaking countries around the world.

Perhaps it's time for the USA to humour the rest of the world.;)

In first grade I learned how to spell certain words in the corrrect, English form, including colour and humour.

In second grade, however, it was no longer the correct spelling for either word, as the "u" had been dropped, a victim of phonics.

I still spell them with a "u"; call me provincial, or pig-headed, or implacable.

I also write "cheques" from my accounts.

;)

Funny how this comment comes from someone in the most imperialistic country since the fall of the Roman Empire. Also funny how the rise of the US to the most powerful country in the world is directly related to your and other European countries failure to be responsible for your own security. Maybe we should have let Hitler take over the country, then we wouldn't have to hear these trivial complaints about spelling of worlds. I haven't seen where the US is trying to force our spelling of words on you.

JUB always goes with the American spelling of English words.

Yet the majority of English speaking countries - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, et al, use the UK spelling. Is it not time for the USA to get in line with rest of the English-speaking world?

NO it is not time for the USA to get in line, as you might know, the USA came about BECAUSE they were trying to get AWAY from the church of England. Thats when they set out and bumped into that rock with their Plymouth.

The US has a population that exceeds the sum of Canada, England, and Australia by a large margin. The US is the largest English as a first language country in the world. I know India recognizes english but Hindi and its derivatives/sister tongues are the primary languages of India. So maybe in terms of sheer numbers you all should listen to the US. Also the US isn't the most imperialistic nation on earth, it was not the US that began WWI or WWII but we did finish them, it was not the US that divided India and Pakistan haphazardly resulting in decades of conflict, it was not the US that instilled a deep vein of racism in Africa, and finally we didn't rape and ravage huge areas of the earth for the glorification of an empire. We treated the natives like animals and that is a grave tragedy, we dd go into Vietnam, that was a mistake, we did go into Korea and some may believe that was a mistake, we did go into Afghanistan for a good reason but GOP handling has been disastrous, Iraq is a mess, and several other foreign policy steps were just wrong but the US has done many things to benefit the rest of world that weren't directly beneficial to us. The US has made mistakes but I am getting tired of Europe's holier than thou attitude, your hands aren't exactly free of blood, and your mistakes have had huge effects on the rest of the world for more than 100 years. I am done ranting. [-X

But on a less serious note, I like the spelling cheque better than check. It is more specific. :D

 it's so easy, i just CAN'T resist:

ford and gm built the first german tanks in wwii; and our government allowed them to. we didn't start wwii, but our people helped to make it happen.

it was not the US that divided India and Pakistan haphazardly resulting in decades of conflict,

correct, what we as a nation do is encourge civil war within those countries and help the new friendly governments with gifts (eg panama and columbia)

it was not the US that instilled a deep vein of racism in Africa, and finally we didn't rape and ravage huge areas of the earth for the glorification of an empire.

also true, north and south america, the carribean and polynesia only make up 1/3 of the world's landmass. so technically, our country hasn't rape or ravaged areas as huge as england, portrugal, spain, holland or denmark; but we young..... you gotta give us time.

We treated the natives like animals and that is a grave tragedy,

and the mexicans,
and the black people
and the gays
blah, blah blah

we dd go into Vietnam, that was a mistake, we did go into Korea and some may believe that was a mistake, we did go into Afghanistan for a good reason but GOP handling has been disastrous, Iraq is a mess, and several other foreign policy steps were just wrong

like veracruz,
like san jose
like hawaii
blah, blah, blah

hay un dicho conocido: "it takes one to know one"

i think you mean 500 years.

columbus = 1492
current year = 2006

difference = 514

But on a less serious note, I like the spelling cheque better than check. It is more specific. :D

i don't like spelling it that way, it takes to long. :)

Dutch: I'm not talking about correct/incorrect. "You say tomato" etc...

I'm just pointing out that over 30 Countries in the world have English as an official language, and the ONLY one that does not use UK spelling is the USA.:-)

The US has a population that exceeds the sum of Canada, England, and Australia by a large margin

over 30 countries not 3 mate i cant be stuffed finding them all and adding up the total population of them all but it is likley to be equal to or exceed that of the united states

plus we can say fuck and shit on free tv and you cant

I don't think any spelling rules make much sense. They are all filled with contradiction. Perhaps in olden days colour was pronounced as tour is. And perhaps realise was pronounced as realice.
I also think Americans changed spelling to let the Royals know that they have no power here. (be gone before someone drops a house on you).
