Here's the deal. Don't confuse "coming out" with trying to make a statement. Coming out is more about you, your friends and your family. It's about not lying, not changing genders when talking about your partners and just making it clear that you expect people to accept you for who you are.

If you're out and about in the neighborhood, none of "coming out" has anything to with how you present yourself to strangers or in public. Save that for the Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, The Village or Chelsea.
 
If you want to, sure :) You also can come out to people you want to, when you want to. Unless you're a celebrity, you have the ability to address it if it happens to come up, without everyone in your life knowing if you don't want to address certain people. Maybe try coming out to someone you don't care too much about what they think(assuming they don't know other people you know) and see how that feels. Like an icebreaker into coming out. You got this.
 
Let's not be unrealistic, the moment you tell someone you lose control over who knows. That doesn't mean you shouldn't come out - in fact most people really could give a shit anyway, but once you tell someone, other people will find out, whether they actually care is another question.
 
It depends on the circumstance. It's not unusual to have friends who don't know each other, or even have straight friends and gay friends. Work friends and non-work friends. We also don't know know how if his family is around his friends or lives in the area. If everyone is in a close group, this is true but we don't know in this case.
 
Its going to happen sooner or later anyhow. I suggest telling one person who can keep a secret. The very act of doing so will change you.
