I am not good at describing pain. I fell last winter and landed on my right hip. It hurts constantly and keeps me awake at night. Also, I hurt my left knee about 10 years ago... it feels like it has a marble in it, it pops and snaps, sometimes it buckles when I stand on it.
On top of this I am a full time care giver, between the pain, the lack of sleep and other demands I feel like I am slowly burning out.

I have had x rays taken of both my hip and knee, they showed nothing. I don't want to be demanding, but I feel as though it's time for an MRI. Would it be wrong to ask? Should I suggest it?

I think that MOST of us are NOT good at describing pain.

I'm sorry to hear about yours.

As far as suggesting additional tests -- well, that should be expected for someone in your situation.

Personally, I've had pain that varies on the "pain scale" in BOTH of my shoulders since May. The Dr has put me on a mild muscle relaxant that only works when it is on the lower end of the scale. Fortunately, my pain is due to a special diet that I'm trying (joint pain is common for those in ketosis) to get me off of my cholesterol medicine. So, I'm willing to go along with it unless it proves fruitless. ;)

I'll find out in late October.

Xrays are good at detecting bone injury but don't pick up much soft-tissue injury.

If you're not seeing an ortho specialist, ask for a referral to one.

If you're on Medicare, you can probably get an order for an MRI as the next study. If you're on managed care, you might have to get an ultrasound before you get an MRI but you definitely do need studies beyond X-ray.

I don't know your insurance situation, but if you have any, be proactive. Regardless of your carrier, pre-authorize everything. I'm pushing 30 and my lifestyle has taken its toll. Sometimes our bodies cannot heal themselves. Do everything in your power to be proactive. This is just me, but I was having a rough go of it with arthritis and a friend recommended I stop eating red meat. The improvement is astounding, advice is cheap. Be as proactive as you can.

Do your big toe(s) hurt also?

I dealt with a shoulder for several years that ached when I reached upwards. Doc said most likely arthritis and gave me anti-inflammatory that also had small amount of pain relief (an NSAID I believe). That treatment worked but I had to continue to take it. So once the pain was gone I would taper off of it and then stop until the pain returned a few weeks for months later.

It wasn't until I had a big toe start to hurt, and an elbow, when they took a blood test and found I had Gout (a form of arthritis). There is a pill that reduces the uric acid in the blood that reduces the crystals that form in the joints that cause pain. It works very well for me. I've been symptom free for several years and just stated a month ago to reduce the once a day pill to every other day (I'm doing this without asked the doc).

I learned that the hospital uses a pain scale of 1 to 10...while my 9 was probably most people's 10 I also discovered that is the point they just go right for the Morphine!

I use the below chart to tell doctors what I am feeling. As for asking for tests or more there is nothing wrong with standing up for yourself or others.

An update: I bought a new chair and got rid of my couch. The Chair is a recliner, but very firm. I still get a twinge of pain, but the dull aching pain that kept me awake at night has left.

Very insightful chart. Do you know who and how they developed this scale?

No. My old pain clinic gave it us to use so our doctors knew 100% without a doubt what we were feeling. I find it helpful so I don't over or understate my pain.

It's a scale based loosely on the Mayo Pain Scale. I've seen the 0-10 descriptor chart referred to as the "Comparative Pain Scale" and I think it was developed by one of the chronic pain support group organizations a few years back when JCACHO started promoting pain scales as part of hospital assessments.
