Hey guys,

So my previous post "should I get it checked" regarding the hard bump on the shaft of my penis. I was at the doctor office today and the doctor said she doesn't know what it is!? She asked if I wanted to be given a treatment for herpes!!! But that she wasn't sure it actually was herpes! This is complete bullshit, because I've tried to explain how it appeared and how that "bump" was always there but very tiny, and now it's a bit larger and solid. She's prescribing an ointment now, but honestly I don't know what to think :/

get a second opinion and consider getting a new doctor!

How can your doctor treat you if she doesn't know what's wrong with you?

Get a second opinion, from a new doctor.

What is wrong with some doctors these days? They can just tell you they don't know what is wrong with you and leave at that? I find that very unprofessional. I have seen similar situations here many times, someone goes to their doctor with a concern or illness and the doctor just tells them they don't know; that is totally unacceptable. You should definitely find a new doctor and by all means make sure that your situation is properly addressed if not by your new doctor, then by a specialist. A doctor has a responsibility to find out what your medical problem is, if he or she does not know, they need to consult with their colleagues or refer you to a specialist. "I don't know" it is something you should never accept as a valid answer from your health care professional.

I agree with all of you. My problem is I can't afford to go to another doctor for a second opinion. This doctors office :( and I don't think I can go to the hospital for a bump on my penis, right?

I've also been researching online the differences between herpes and cysts and they seem to be very explanatory! Herpes look like water filled blisters that hurt a lot and cysts look like lumps and are hard (what I have) I don't understand why she would right away jump to wanna treat me for herpes!

she sounds totally incompetent. I'd speak with the office manager and ask for my money back. A doctors office is just like any other business and if you don't get good service you shouldn't have to pay for it. They may give you some bs. answer but don't just take no for an answer. If they won't give you your money back maybe there is a different doctor in that practice that will see you at no charge. Either way you need to see a different physician and get a proper diagnosis.

Steven.

don't they have some sort of gay clinic in your area? ditch the woman doctor---what does she know about penis?

You should go to a urologist to get checked. They specialize in things having to do with your genitals.

A dermatologist should be able to give you a diagnosis. Without having seen it, it does sound like a sebaceous cyst based upon your description.

I don't know what kind of city/town you live in, but in most of the places I've ever lived there are usually some sort of free STI-related clinics that run either routinely or intermittently throughout the year. Try doing a search online for an STI clinic/sexual health clinic in the city you live in.

You might not be totally comfortable going to something like that, but I would say that if money is tight and this is weighing on your mind it's worth it. It sounds more likely that your doctor misdiagnosed you then it is that you have herpes, but at least a doctor/nurse at an STI clinic will be more familiar with that sort of thing and should be able to make a proper diagnosis.

I am sorry if your "healthcare system" doesn't allow you to see a different doctor. Please check your other options such as free clinics. Quite often there are also free check ups for gay men available in bigger cities.

I would assume it is nothing serious, but you have shown a history of "scares" here, so it might be better to ease your mind.

And maybe in the future go to a different doc straight away. Her behavior is highly unprofessional.

probably this. no need to worry.

With regards to a sebaceous cyst, they are usually benign, but seeing as this is on your penis, I would try to relieve it via heat packs and warm baths. DO NOT -- I repeat -- DO NOT puncture it, because you'll end up with an infection and we don't want your penis to look disfigured. Just be careful when applying the heat packs - do 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off and repeat about 3 times a day. That helped with the cyst I had (thought, it was a pilonidal cyst, the treatment I used was similar and it helped. "ventually had the thing removed but that's a different story). For the warm baths, just soak in there for a while...
