I finally quit caffeine/coffee!

I'm at a 2 week period tomorrow. This is something I've been meaning to do for over a year and I finally did it. I quit cold turkey. The changes I like so far: I'm way less anxious, haven't had nearly as many anxiety attacks, my muscles aren't as tight especially in my back, I've been eating more, I sleep wayyyy deeper, I fall asleep easier, and my thoughts are less speedy.

If anyone is having anxiety issues, I urge you to quit caffeine. It makes a huge difference. I was drinking a lot of the stuff, though...

The only downside has been that, despite how I get better/more sleep, I still get groggy a few hours after I wake up, like around 12 or 1 PM... I consider how usually that's when I would grab my 3rd coffee of the day (after the 2 I would drink upon waking up) but then I'd be so wired by the end of the day that it was hard to sleep, thus starting the dependency cycle.

Does anyone have experience with this? How did you deal with the grogginess? I've been buying smoothies once in a while with natural energy shots in them, like ginseng... but I don't want to do that all the time either. I'm hoping it will just wear off and 7-9 hours of sleep will resume a normal affect of feeling normally energized throughout the day without any sort of downtime.
 
I believe I've heard it takes a month for the grogginess to wear off. Also, as much as I hate the E word (exercise), physical activity helps as well.

I felt that way too. Until it got to a point where it was becoming more of an interference in my life than an added bonus... dependency is a bitch. Being a stressball is not fun.
 
I quit soda when I was 12 years old (yeah, not very common for a kid that age to be health conscious). The withdrawals are pretty damn bad for a couple of weeks, but now the only caffeine I have is from the rare cup of green tea, but it's not the same kind of caffeine that's bad for you.
 
Congrats on quitting caffeine!

I got hooked on coffee when I was in the Navy. It got to the point where I had to have that cup of coffee every morning. It caused rapid heart rate and I ended up in ER.

I have since switched to green tea and seem to be doing much better. I use one tea bag per day. I ususally get three cups of tea out of it. The first cup is the strongest.

I never was addicted to coffee but I do know the occasional "midday" "hole".
Basically you are doing the right thing already. Eat something light but with high energy. A little bit of chocolate, an apple or something like that. Always gets me through it :)
 
I used to drink intense amounts of coffee. Last May 1st I stopped all caffeine on the spot. It took about a month, according to my coworkers who said that's how long I was kind of bitchy haha

But I loved it. I'm awake faster in the mornings and I sleep better at night.

Now I've swung back a bit and I have small amounts of caffeine, say a cup or two of coffee a week, but I'm not dependent on it and I still feel great.

Way to go!

Uh... it's proven that it can increase anxiety and stress levels. I love coffee too. I liked the extra boost I got from it. But it wasn't worth all the negatives. Oh, and it causes problems with sleep. It's pretty much packed with issues.

Aaron - yeah, I definitely wake up faster. Did you find a way to deal with the midday drowsiness though? I'm at my 2 week mark yesterday, and I actually got a headache yesterday and the day before, along with being very sleepy after half the day, so I guess I'm not totally through with the withdrawal symptoms just yet. Having a chemical in my system for 5-6 years (if I count soda and green tea before the coffee) probably takes a while to get completely out and for me to get over...

Yeah, but you are missing the point... there ARE things wrong with caffeine, especially in terms of dependency...

Black hole - how long until the drowsiness went away, if you experienced that? did you find any kind of midday thing that perks you up?
 
But saymyname, the thing is coffee, when drunk in moderation (1-2 cups per day) can be beneficial. Problems only arrise with excessive consumption.

Yeah, I get that. But there's also the idea that moderation is hard to achieve because the substance inherently encourages dependency and expansion of use. It's like the idea of being a "moderate" smoker (which I've actually been able to manage quite well).

I do plan on drinking coffee again once I get over the dependency and have it out of my system for a while, so I want to try being moderate with it. I'm just saying that it's easy to become dependent and then it does become a problem for people.
 
I totally quit coffee once before. It didn't last....

Now I have one cup in the morning and maybe a cup at noon. NO sugar! The sugar is worse! And then I drink my cup slowly, savoring it. I used to damn near gargle with coffee. It got to the 20 cup a day habit. Yeeehaaaa!!

I don't drink soda at all, because it's mostly sugar. The sugar is what you really need to stay away from. The afternoon slump is easy. Eat fruit in the morning for breakfast. Running steady all day. And it takes some time for the body to adjust to the lack of constant sugar and caffeine. The end result is steady energy all day long, and YES, you sleep properly again.

How the hell DID we all get hooked on coffee to begin with??? I can't even remember when that happened...
 
The withdrawal isn't bad at all if you've varied your caffeine consumption enough. It gets much more addictive if you drink the same amount at the same time every day.
 
I find an intense dose of nutrients does the trick. It's easy when your body slumps to blame it on being tired but it could be energy based too. I have been drinking smoothies once or twice a day and it has the same effect. First thing in the morning it makes me feel great.

Yeah. Sounds like what I suspected - smoothies definitely help, but they can be expensive.

Audio Tech - Glad to hear from someone who could quit and get back into it without getting dependent again. I know exactly how it got addiction based for me... I started drinking one cup in the morning on my way to high school during my junior year, halfway through the year... I kept that kind of routine until I graduated high school and moved out on my own. In high school, I'd drink it on the way to school, or during first period, they maybe have another halfway through the day... nothing too bad. But when I moved out on my own, I started making coffee as soon as I'd wake up, and this was in college, so I wouldn't have to leave for class right away. So I got into the habit of drinking a cup, then a cup and a half, then 2 cups, sometimes 2 and a half cups, in the morning, before getting ready for the day. After doing that for a while, I could hardly even leave the house without drinking coffee BEFORE getting ready. Pretty bad.

Average Joe - that makes sense, but could you elaborate on why that is? Or where you heard that information? I guess in terms of withdrawal symptoms starting a certain number of hours since your last intake, having a set schedule will make you much more aware of when and how badly you want/need it...

That's true for two reasons:

1) If you take it at the same time, you feel like you need it just because it's part of your routine.

2) If you take it at a steady level, your body builds up a tolerance. Mixing it up makes it harder for the body to get used to it.
 
The newest evidence suggests that coffee, especially LARGER amounts, may be associated with decreased mortality :D

Sure, if you're an anxious person, it may not be the best for your mood. But for me? I'm going to go brew another cup!
