It made the rest of my night. A frazzled lady comes into the Cafe, looks around a bit, looks lost, so asked if I can help her find anything. She said not sure, needed something to eat, but did not have much money. So I suggest a few of our cheaper menu items, she saw that we carry gardenburgers, but all I had in stock tonight was Bocaburger, she said that that would be fine. So I made her order, and she said she is here at the hospital with a friend, who's husband is having heart palpataions, and have been here since early morning, this was about 6pm when she came in, and this is the first chance she got to get a bite to eat. I said how sorry I was to hear, hope this burger helps, give it to her, she had a question about our cookies we carry, told her we bake some fresh each day, and are cheaper and better in my opinion, then the pakaged ones.
She gets a few, and is off. A bit later I see her standing in front of the coffee, we carry Starbucks, and Maxwell House, she said she'd like a Starbucks, but didn't know which to get, we carry a Starbucks house blend, and a Cafe Vernoia, I told her the differance in the 2, then said the Maxwell house is 50 cents cheaper, and in my opinion is better tasting, cause it brews each cup as you serve it, so it is allways hot and fresh, where as the Starbucks is brewed into air pots, and sits and gets lukewarm and stale over time, she goes for the Maxwell, and if off again. Just before we close for the night she comes up and says that the Bocabuger was thebest she has ever had, and thanked me for all my help, and hands me a dollar bill, I said I don't need it, I was just doing my job, she said I think you do! You were very helpful. I said well thank you very much, and hope all goes well with your friends husband. And she left!
I just wanted to share!!! :D

That's cool. And she was right, you do deserve it. Good help is hard to find...|

Thanks for sharing. I understand what she is going through. I wish her and her family the best. It sounds like it is either taking them a while to normalize her husband's heart or they are just keeping him in to keep a close eye on him....I'm hoping it is the later.

Having been in similar situations as hers (spending all day at a hospital because of ill family members), I know that talking to you, having the hamburger and the coffee were very welcome respites in an otherwise long, draining day for her.

It helps to remember that sometimes the encouraging kind words we give people may be the only ones they've had that day...

Working with the public every day, I tend to forget how it can feel when someone is nice to you and provides you with service that you feel is only doing your job. I would be willing to bet that the one thing she will remember the most about this long day at the hospital is "the nice young man that helped me in the food service area." At the store that I work at we get more compliments about our employees that are only providing normal service then we do about the ones that have really gone out of their way to help a customer with something.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I really don't think I did anything special, but yes I do have to remember that it is a hospital, and people may not be in the best of moods. I normally do not get tips, or expect them, and this lady said she was short on funds in the first place, so when she gave me the dollar it was most unexpected. So to Nonimus, I would not slap her silly!!

Awww, that's amazing. It sounds inspirational.^_^ I'm glad to hear you were so kind about everything. Most of the time someone is annoyed whenever they are asked a question and they're behind a counter. I'm glad you didn't give her some bullshit and then a sassed attitude. So you're one very generous soul to spend the time speakin to a little old lady.:D

Good job. Isn't it nice receiving something when not expected?
It doesn't matter if it is just a 1 dollar bill or just a thank you, it's always very welcome.

That's cool!

Its easy for people to bitch but it takes an extra effort to compliment someone. That must have felt good. :)

I thought this was going to be a rant about a cheap tip after you worked your ass off. I was pleasantly suprised! I know you say you were just doing your job, but very few in the service industry still feel that way. It's nice to find service like the kind you provide and I know you feel good when acknowledged. Good going, my friend!

Flogging the feces. Hmm. This sounds mildly amusing. =]

sorry for the second alliteration

I completely agree with Nonimus first post. What can you buy with a dollar nowadays? Not even a latte at Starbucks. Honestly.
