  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I had a popo and a nana

Grandmom & Granddad.

Grandmother and Grandfather.

My great-grandmother was universally called "Mammaw," which is odd, considering we have no French ancestry, nor were we descended from tidewater families or plantation culture where the French would have been common. She was referred to semi-formally by her daughters-in-law as "Mother A----s" and her husband, "Dad A----s."

All that said, my hometown originally had a French name, so it is not that surprising that elements of French culture occasionally peek through.

On my Dad's side...Nanna and Dadda and my mother's side Pake and Beppe.

What did you call your grandparents as a child?
Grandma and Grandpa (on both sides of family)

If we needed to be more specific we added the surname (last name) such as Grandma Jones or Grandpa Doe. We never used a first name such as Grandma Jane.

Gramma and grampa from day to day.
Grandma and grandpa on formal occasions or when introducing someone.

My paternal grandpa died when I was 2, but all the grandkids called him Paw Paw. I called my maternal grandma "Grandmother" and my paternal grandma "Muh" (as in "Muh'Dear" or "Mother Dear").
