I learned this game years ago.
(Although I fully expect this thread to wind up in F&G, I wasn't necessarily posting it on the forum to start a game to play here, as there are no cars on the information superhighway. Just a little meme I got infected with years ago, and I thought I'd share....)
The rules are simple. They only apply to licence plates that have three letters on them, like "347-MOK"
The goal is to come up with the shortest word that has those three letters in it, in the order that they appear on the license plate, but not necessarily next to each other. In the case of a tie, the word closest to the beginning of the alphabet wins.
In the above example, "smoke" would be a valid entry, but "oakum" would not, as the order of the letters is different.
"Monks" is also a valid entry even though the letters are not next to each other, and would win out over "smoke" because even though they both have the same number of letters, "monks" is closer to the beginning of the alphabet.
"Monk," would, of course, beat out "monks" because "monk" is the shorter word. I can think of one word that would win out over "monk," however.
It's a much more fun game than the standard "count-the-states" license plate game my parents played on car trips when i was a kid. I find myself trying to come up with winning words in traffic all the time, even when I'm riding by myself.
okay, I'm wierd, I know it.
