When I was about 16 or so, the whole Exorcist frenzy was washing over the country, and churches were sometimes reeling from it.

In particular, I recall a Baptist revival, complete with a Cadillac-driving evangelist, who was whipping up everyone into hysteria, claiming demons were everywhere and even had people exorcising their Bibles, since demons could be hiding there.

Oi, veh! I knew then it was charlatanism.

I knew people in CA that were fighting against prop 8 (making marriage equality illegal) and were going door to door talking to people. In the same area, groups of people were going around, were literally talking in tongues, asking people to support it.
