How risky are they? I go online to meet guys and bj's are the only thing i want to do to them. What if i have a cut in my mouth? How long should i wait after flossing? What if he precums alot? Sometimes I am out at the bars and chew gum, but i end up biting my cheek. How long should i wait if i have a small cut? HELP, i am paranoid![-X

"Dr. Rosenstein, say you're out at a club and this hot guy is eyeballing you from across the dance floor, and you two later meet on the floor and walking out but he has to wake up early in the morning to go to work.... do you think if I chewed gum and bit my cheek that I shouldn't give him head?"

Any open sore increases the risk. As for flossing, if you do it on a regular basis I doubt you have areas of inflammation or bleeding, so don't think that is a problem. But open sore, deal's off.

Minimum of three days healing required, but five would be safer.

Use CONDOMS for head too! Especially if you're unsure! HIV Risk is low, but there are so many nasties out there.... herpes, genital warts (which can transfer to oral, same as herpes). Why risk it? They have flavored condoms for a reason!

A very good answer.

Giving or getting a BJ is a matter of significant biohazard. There are cuts, inflamed gum sections, possibly minute fissures in your mouth and possibly other open wounds.

Most guys won't come into your mouth without asking for your permission first. Some will and even so on purpose.

Bodily fluids do contain carriers of several nasty, if curable bugs.

Hardly any BJ is worth a full syph treatment, when you come to think about it.

And this applies to both the sucker and the suckee.

So, yeah, it is either a condom or nothing.

I have always said if you are gonna worry about stds with strangers than stop having tricks and know who you are with. But I believe you are fine and not gonna catch anything from a cut in your mouth. If you're gonna get Gon or Shyp or herp, than a cut has nothing to do with that. You are not gonna get H.I.V. this way.

Not necessarily true. It DOES happen. But it is much much much rarer than with anal sex.... much. But it can still happen.

I'd agree with above that you can get STDs with unprotected oral sex. So if you want to be safe, either do it with somebody you know and trust (still a risk arguably for sure) or use a condom.

BJs are risky...anytime you have the possibility of semen reaching your blood, whether it's through a cut, or open gums or anything then there is the possibility of catching something

Not true. Herpes can be spread by skin contact and oral herpes can be transferred by kissing...

Genital herpes to oral herpes is less frequent.

Well, I don't think it's dismissable, since HSV-1 and hSV-2 can both cause genital herpes from oral-to-genital contact. Also, syphillus can be caught from oral contact to an infected region.

Have to agree with the condom idea. If I ever hookup with a guy I don't know I always make him wear a condom for a bj. If he doesn't like that, tough, it's his loss. Even if the guy looked clean down below, there's always the chance he could have something.

I haven't been with many guys. What's the expectation with blow jobs and condoms? I feel like most guys wouldn't go for such a thing. I am totally in favor of it, if it's the safe thing to do, but in my mind, I don't see many guys going for it.

show me one documented case. A case where the person only did oral and did not also have sex. I think the disease would be so much larger if you got it from oral. But of course if you are not sure wear a rubber. Not many gay men that I know blow guys with rubbers on.And these guys are all negative. It's a personal choice I guess.

OMG... not again! I'm tired tonight so I won't go into it. But there ARE in fact documented cases. There's an entire thread on it somewhere in here, but I don't have time to dig it up right now. The chances are LOW but they do in fact exist.

trust me I have no desire to get into it either. I have done a lot of A.I.D.S work and we were always told to tell people they could get it through oral but we all always said in private there is no chance.Even the doctors we worked with had the same opinion. I have actually not knowingly dated 3 guys with H.I.V. I found out after oral but we never fucked. The one guy I had a cut in my mouth, just brushed my teeth, and he had a cut on his dick from his zipper. Now if that didn't give it to me than I don't know what would?! But I never got it. I would never have done all that with him cause we are all scared of disease but H.I.V. isn't as easy to catch as is thrown out on here. Some of these young boys are running so scared they can't function. No need to over stress these boys. H.I.V. is NOT the biggest thing to worry about with oral. But all the other diseases are. Gon.sphy.herp.warts. Those are the biggies with oral. Anyway, I have known a shit load of people who had h.i.v. and they all got it from barebacking.but once again use a rubber if you are scared about oral.

I would say you were lucky. But really, the odds were still greatly in your favor. It is difficult to catch HIV with oral sex, somewhere on here there are statistics about it (rough estimates obviously) but it does happen on very rare occasions. The fear comes from the fact that even though rare, it is the worst in terms of being a progressive, untreatable disease that eventually kills you. And yes, the anti-retrovirals today are great, but how long they extend life is unknown at this point simply b/c they haven't been around long enough, but regardless, it is very significant.

H.I.V. isn't as easy to catch as is thrown out on here.
I tend to agree. I mean there are bug chasers (highly discouraged) that have unprotected anal sex regularly with positive guys and don't get infected. I think that the truth is... it's contagious, unprotected anal is definitely the most effective means of transmission but still not guaranteed, but it is possible (although highly unlikely) to contract it orally. There's quite a bit of good research out there (I don't remember if quoted or not, at some point I'll make a sticky about it all when I have more time). The key is knowing the risks and finding a level of risk that is acceptable to each person.

I agree... and I agree that this isn't healthy either. The key is knowledge, about the diseases and about self to determine acceptable level of risk.

Definitely agree here. The difference is that these are either treatable, or not life threatening. That is why people don't talk as much about them. But they are far more infectious and transmittable with oral than HIV.

This came up in a conversation with my ex boyfriend and a friend of his... but the safest bet is once you've finished performing oral sex on somebody instead of brushing or doing anything to risk a cut or scratch inside the mouth... rinse thoroughly with mouthwash maybe 2 or 3 times. That would greatly decrease the chance of any kind of infection.
