I thought Tyra Banks was more open-minded about gays...

after she yelled at Shirley Phelps.

But she's pretty ignorant herself. Apparently she has a scientist on the show and she's trying to figure out whether people are gay or straight by their voices.

They have old home videos of the guys, too. Why is this crap even allowed on TV?

If it's a segment, it's for ratings. It's like the show Gay, Straight, or Taken? There's an audience out there that are fascinated by watching people determine if someone is something by using stereotypes. I don't think she's homophobic, because if that was the case, she wouldn't even associate herself with gay people. Ignorant, maybe. I've seen some of her episodes of that modeling show, and she sure isn't the sweet model that she tries to put forth.

Well, she just had that gaydar episode...

Idk, I think she's just doing what the she thinks is right to make homosexuality more accepted

Actually his work is kind of credible. Whether we as gay people as a whole want to admit it or not, there are certain characteristics that differentiate the majority of us from straight men, and some of them are outwardly visible to those trained to identify them. Yes, there are always exceptions to everything, and as much as we like to promote that the stereotype ISN'T true, or isn't always the case, stereotypes become stereotypes for a reason, they're often very true in a large number of said population. Again, not all of them, never all of them, but a lot.

Example: Gay men have higher more feminine voices than straight men. Is this a stereotype? Yes. Is it true for every gay man? Nope. But the reality is, it IS true for A LOT of gay men, possibly (and probably) a majority of them.

The issue is when stereotypes are used to harm a group of people, or used in a derogatory manner. But stereotypes on their own, or at least the actual facts behind them, aren't good, bad, or indifferent, they're just there. And they can be observed, and identified. As long as they're not seen as a negative, then they're just traits. And the bottom line is, gay people have traits that are identifiable, that's not a bad thing, it's when people twist them into something else that it becomes a bad thing.

We aren't all the same (and we aren't just the same as straight people), we're all different. But different IS NOT a bad thing. Instead of trying to spread the message that we're "just the same" as straight people, we should be spreading the message that yes, we are different, but that people should embrace that difference, and recognize that everyone is different (and thus the same), and that it's a great and wonderful thing.

i agree. but what i wanted someone was to ask the doctor if he was gay. i thought he was. it woulda been funny how he was on his high horse trying to act all scientifically figuring things out. but in the end hekinda just went on hunches and instinct.

Why would his sexual orientation invalidate his research? We all claim to have gaydar (OK, I actually have it...LOL), so why not attempt to see if it's actually quantifiable? Personally, I hate the stereotype that we're all thin-skinned and easily offended, but threads like this tend to validate the stereotype.;)

I don't hate Tyra Banks, but I do hate a ton of the stuff she does on her talk show & this was one of them. People will do anything for ratings & you'd think she'd have more respect since she seems pretty close the Jays & obviously a bunch of others in the fashion industry

I like her on Top Model most of the time, because its modeling & she knows that stuff, but I wish they'd ax her talk show...

I personally believe I was born gay. I believe the biological reason is likely hormone based and I see no reason why this would not possibly effect a person's voice. I'm not offended. Don't really think it's all that improbable. I believe there are stereotypes about teh way gay people think or act that are not true but I don't know how one can deny what is in many ways very obvious. What I'm curious to know is whether or not other cultures have a conceptions about gay men and high voices it may give creedance to the idea that it's reality and not simply a cultural stereotype.

Hey can someone list which of the guys was gay on the show? I was watching the show (in horror) and had to leave before the big reveal at the end.
Thanks.

i saw it a while ago but i think all of them were gay except the black guy and the hot latin guy. it figures. the latin guy was the only one i found attractive. that one guy that hunted and didn't "seem" gay surprised the audience most.

i also thought the quack doctor who administered the test gay and full of shit because in the end he just when on his hunches about stereotypes instead of his formula.

Well whatever you say about her talk show AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL is one of the best shows on tv. I haven't watched her talk show a lot. It's not really that good but Top Model I will watch FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

So, anyway, the former female Pakistanian prime minister was assassinated this week...

Yeah, we know, and it's depressing, so some of us who have been deeply moved by it and are in mourning would like a distracting thread that doesn't mention it every now and then, thanks.
