Apparently she has a scientist on the show and she's trying to figure out whether people are gay or straight by their voices.
They have old home videos of the guys, too. Why is this crap even allowed on TV?
Actually his work is kind of credible. Whether we as gay people as a whole want to admit it or not, there are certain characteristics that differentiate the majority of us from straight men, and some of them are outwardly visible to those trained to identify them. Yes, there are always exceptions to everything, and as much as we like to promote that the stereotype ISN'T true, or isn't always the case, stereotypes become stereotypes for a reason, they're often very true in a large number of said population. Again, not all of them, never all of them, but a lot.
Example: Gay men have higher more feminine voices than straight men. Is this a stereotype? Yes. Is it true for every gay man? Nope. But the reality is, it IS true for A LOT of gay men, possibly (and probably) a majority of them.
The issue is when stereotypes are used to harm a group of people, or used in a derogatory manner. But stereotypes on their own, or at least the actual facts behind them, aren't good, bad, or indifferent, they're just there. And they can be observed, and identified. As long as they're not seen as a negative, then they're just traits. And the bottom line is, gay people have traits that are identifiable, that's not a bad thing, it's when people twist them into something else that it becomes a bad thing.
We aren't all the same (and we aren't just the same as straight people), we're all different. But different IS NOT a bad thing. Instead of trying to spread the message that we're "just the same" as straight people, we should be spreading the message that yes, we are different, but that people should embrace that difference, and recognize that everyone is different (and thus the same), and that it's a great and wonderful thing.
