This post involves anal itching, so if that grosses you out, I'd stop reading now.

I know this is probably the inappropriate place to be asking this question, but hopefully someone on here will be able to steer me in the right direction.

I'm unable to go see a Dr. because my health insurance is horrible and I have to pay full price for any visit. So I am trying to diagnose the problem on my own.

For the past 4 months or so, I have been having problems with itching in my anus region. I have had rectal problems in the past, such as bleeding due to stress, fissures, etc, but that was many years ago. I have never had anal sex, so it is not due to this, rather just make make-up. I have also had a few hemorrhoids in the past, which caused a "bump," but this current situation is not quite the same. Basically when I try to stick a finger in there, it is extremely tight, and I always have "spots" where it is very sensitive. It seems to be different from day to day. It also looks gross...like I have a clit...if that makes sense? (BTW - these are questions I am mortified to ask a Dr., so that is why I am trying to ask other gay men)

This burning or itching sensation comes and goes, but sometimes it is really bad, to the point that I can't stand it. I've been using preparation H and cortisone cream, which provides temporary relief, but it does not seem to be going away. What concerns me is the occasional feeling that occurs at night right when I am about to go to sleep...it will just burn and tingle.

As I said, I've never had anal sex, but have been receiving quite a few rim jobs over the past 6 months. (I'm coming out at 27-28 years old...so lots of new experiences!)

As far as I have read, this can be a lot of different things, including possibly pinworms, which completely grosses me out. In any case, I really need help because I want to remain healthy and will go to the Dr. if it is recommended. I just want it to get better so perhaps I can bottom eventually. I have been seeing this guy who I am completely in love with and I want to be able to be intimate with him, but also know I can't mess myself up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It would seem to me..but i'm not a doctor of course, that you aren't getting enough Fiber in your diet. I used to have this problem for awhile as well. Bad itching, hemerrhoids. I've also never had anal sex either.

The creams will only do just that, temporary relief. I resorted to suppositories, which did help me. I also changed my diet and incorporated more foods with high fiber content.

hhmmmm sounds like pinworm might be a possibility, I have added some links to medical sites that might help you identify whats wrong and suggestions of how to treat it.

hope you find something in there that will help to ease your discomfort :-)

not sure how things work for you in the US but in the UK the staff in health foods shops are VERY helpful on matters like this, if you don't mind telling them a little bit about your problem they can sometimes offer some suggestions on something that can help, might be an alternative if you cant go to a GP

For God sake get yourself to a doctor. Anybody who is an MD will not flinch at the kinds of questions you have. Suck it up and ask. Once you break the ice, the next time it won't be a problem. Also, if you have something that could be transmitted to your potential partner, you'll want to get it cleared up before you try anything.
Quit trying to self-diagnose.

Lonnie...the problem is I don't have the money to go see a Doctor. It is very hard for me to say that...but I don't have a job currently and down on my luck. :-(

The itching and "bump" are very classic symptoms of hemorrhoidal inflammation.

You can continue to try the symptom relief- cortisone creams and suppositories, fiber in your diet, soaks in a hot tub (aka sitz bath) and baby aspirin. But given the history and the length of time this has been going on, you will probably need to see a doctor as soon as you are financially able. If it is hemorrhoids, you're probably going to need minor surgery to ligate, sclerose or remove them.

You might also consider applying for Medicaid or a public clinic program so that you have health care.

By all means you should see a doctor...even if it's a rectal exam just to get his opinion. He can perform a simple in-office exam to make sure you have no blood in your stool/rectal area or determine if it is from hemorrhoids. Ask ahead what it will cost and explain your financial situation ($50?...idk) My doctor only charged me $35 per visit a few years ago when I was going through tough times and had no insurance.

Anyway...

I've experienced similar rectal itching in the past...under control for the most part now. I have Seborrheic Dermatitis which flares up when I eat certain foods. Foods that cause the flare ups are vinegars, pickles, yeast (breads), sugars and sweets, olive/olive oil, mushrooms, beer and alcohols, soy sauce (and other sauces), fermented condiments, etc. Experiment by eliminating all these from your diet for at least a week to 10 days...see if the itching subsides or goes away. If it does stop...gradually reintroduce each back into your diet. If a flare up reoccurs ...you may have found the source of the problem. If this doesn't help...at least you'll know it's probably not a food allergy/intolerance.
