Your county health organization might be able to help you.

Phoenix is a large enough city that it should have free clinics available.

Also, there should be an area hospital in a city that large that will admit those who are unable to pay.

Good luck, Quanchi

You're 21 (according to your profile). You're not too old to seek help from your parents.

You know it's reading things like this that makes me glad for the NHS in the UK no matter what problems it may have.

A couple of things:

If you had insurance at your old job, they should have sent you a COBRA letter informing you that you can continue your health insurance for up to 18 months. The catch is that you have to pay the full premium including the employer portion. But at least you'll have insurance.

If you were laid off, you will qualify for employment benefits and you may be able to qualify for state assistance programs like Medicaid (which in Arizona is known as AHCCCS). The public health system in your area is Maricopa Integrated Health System. You can apply for benefits using their online forms. Don't wait until you need it to apply- get your Medicaid coverage before you need it.

If you do get sick, understand that if you pay cash, you can get many of your health providers to give you the same price that they would have given your insurance company. For example, if your doctor charges $150 for an office visit but your insurance company would have paid him $75, you can usually get the doctor to give you the $75 rate if you pay cash. The same is true of hospitals- they'd rather have money than have to turn you over to a collection agency- so pay cash and negotiate for a lower price if you don't have insurance.
