I just bought a laptop and it has wireless connection, but I cannot find this driver for it.
It always says it cannot be found.
Any ideas where I can get it?

Hey Nolie, how are you?
Well, I bought an used laptop and I tested it and it has a wireless card. The problem is that I formatted it and reinstalled Windows XP and now it does not recognize neither the audio card nor the wireless card, which I am sure are there in the computer.
It is an AMD mobile Duron, 846MHz, 320 RAM memory, Windows XP SP 2.

Well there's your problem ;). You formatted the computer, which means you erased all the drivers it had installed. So you'll need to visit the manufacturer's website for each component and download the latest drivers.

We need to know:
The make and model video card
The make and model sound card
The make and model wireless adapter

-OR-

The make and model of the laptop itself

In order to steer you to the correct websites.


Also, if you could go to "LEFT CLICK 'My Computer' > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager" and tell us what listed there has either an icon with a red 'X' or a yellow '!', that would help us determine if there are other components that need drivers other than the three listed above (I know you didn't say video driver, but chances are you're running the WinXP default, and still need a specific device driver for your video adapter).
 
Hey Provenlogic, what´s up?
The make of my laptop is XTP, and the devices that are in yellow are the video card, sound card, modem and wireless card.
I thought that Windows XP could recognize all the hardware in the computer (or at least most of them), but I think I was terribly wrong.

Yea, WinXP does a "better" job at recognizing devices than previous incarnations, it's still not 100%. And besides, they'd ALWAYS be microsoft's drivers. You really want your manufacturer's drivers whenever possible.

XTP? Ok... that's a step in the right direction ;). XTP what? And what brand? A good example of a make and model would be "an IBM Thinkpad T43p". We need that kind of specific info, or if you know the make and model of the individual components, that would work too. Once we have that info, it should be easy to get your video, sound, modem, and wireless adapter drivers. :D

What about the NAME OF THE LAPTOP ITSELF? What brand is it? IBM? SONY? DELL? And what model? There will be some indication on the face of the laptop, or bottom.

Ok go to your manufacturer's download page here: http://www.averatec.com/customercare/downloads.asp

select 5500 series in the "series" box, then "AV5500-EA1" in the part # box (which by the way is the only one there so i'm guessing that's the right one). then in the third box it lists all the ones you need. highlight the one you want first and then click the "Go" button right under that third box. Some of the drivers are pretty large downloads, so you may want to download them all to like a USB stick (flash drive, thumb drive or what ever you call them ;) ) and then use that to transfer them to your laptop.

AHH SEE! There you go, i knew there was something wrong with Syntax being the brand ;). Averatec makes more sense, and mike's pointed you to the right links as well.
 
/\ are you getting any error messages associated with the sound? did the driver at least install?

try doing this to make sure the correct device is selected as your default play device.

1. click start and go to settings and then your control panel
2. if you are not in classic view, just click the "sounds and audio devices" icon.
3. on the volume tab make sure "mute" is not checked and the sound volume slider is turned up.
4. on the audio tab, make sure "vinyl AC'97 Audio (WAVE)" is the default playback device.
5. click the volume button on that same page and make sure the sound sliders for "volume control" and "wave" are turned up and their "mute" buttons are not checked.

some other things to double check
1. make sure the volume dial on the right edge of your laptop is turned up (that's where the manual says it is, but i don't see it in the pictures they give).
2. press and hold in the "Fn" key and then press the F5 button (repeatedly) and see if that turns up the volume at all (you should see some bars show up on the screen that increase as you go up) Fn plus the F6 key should then turn the volume down.
