Well, I met an 18 year old online and we hit it off pretty quick. Hes really nice and we get along great and have a lot in common. But at the same time its kinda weird because he just graduated high school. I know its only a few years difference but I don't know what to do. Am I just overreacting or is it weird? Thanks in advance

You're both consenting adults. Enjoy and be safe.

You are probably NOT overreacting. Those 3 years of difference between you could be significant because a lot of maturing has taken place during them for you. If this is just about sex, there are no legal issues, but if it is about a relationship, only time will tell if you are in compatible places in life.

It might seem like a lot, but in truth there is next to no difference between 18 and 21. Yes, people change quickly in that period, but even if there is some marginal difference in maturity right now, he'll catch up if he spends time with you. Don't treat him like a lesser being just because he is coming out of high school. To a 26-year old, you're both just children ;)

Ur over reacting and there is nothing wrong, I was 18 when I met my honey and he was 24....he was/as is the best thing that happened to me.

and we are still together, going on our 28th yr in 7weeks....so act like a big and don't be afraid/scared.. plus your both of age and you can have a lot of fun...

I've always felt weird dating someone who isn't in his 20's. But I think you should just keep talk to him and see how it feels. We're all different - some 18 year-olds are quite mature of their age. If it still feels weird and you think that his age really shows in several levels, then move on. But hey, try it out. You never know what you might miss out on.

Enjoy the compatibility you have. Some of us are programmed to self-sabotage when things are going well. He's too young; he's too old; he's ginger; he's not ginger, etc, etc. Don't fall into that trap. Hang on for as long as it lasts with a big fat smile on your face and lightheartedness. Good luck to you guys!

Have you met him in person yet? is it your "sense" that he's too young for you based on meeting him and observing him? or is it just in your head?

have you met?

some 18 year olds are like 16 - some are like 18 - some older

which one is he?

how about you? are you 21 like 17 or 21 like 21 or older?

you have to EXPERIENCE a person before you judge - that's my take

good luck

I don't see anything wrong with this picture based on what you given us. If you're not used to relationships you probably want somebody with more experience and a little older than you.

^ I think Seasoned's nailed it here.
Just relax and see what happens.

Thanks everyone. We've been talking lately and were just kinda feeling everything out right now. We'll just see how everything goes. Thanks again.

It's not a big deal. Neither of you should be expecting to find "The One" at this point in your lives. Enjoy your time together. The only disadvantage is you can't take him out for a drink ;) (Assuming you're American)

Maybe you feel that you're at different stages of life and I totally agree that the three year gap can make a big difference.

So you're 21, are you studying at university? Does he also plan to study at university. If you're both going to be studying, stage of life wise there's no problem. If one of you is working full time and the one other one studies, that's when there may be a problem (and I've seen it and experienced it first hand).

So when you are 24 he will be 21? Maybe you guys will still be together if you're both lucky? Wow.
Would you have a problem today at 21 going out with a 24 yr old guy?

21 and 18 can feel like a big difference. Much bigger than 21 and 24. And 22 and 25. There's something about the difference between teen vs. 20's years that seems significant, but really it's not. It's actually very interesting how important the difference between the "decades" are to our psyche. It's like our number structure is actually influencing our feelings. Hypothetically, if humans had 12 fingers, i.e. we used base-12, your ages would be 16 and 19 (perfectly fine) and the big "jump" in our minds wouldn't be until you were 1a and 21 (which would be 22 and 25, not a big deal right?).
Geeked out there for a while. Sorry for using your situation for my mathematical masturbation haha What I'm trying to say I guess is that the importance of such a small age difference is just a construct and if it doesn't affect your chemistry or how you guys relate don't let the numbers bother you! It is legal, after all, and according to the trusty formula (your age / 2 + 7) it's not even weird!

It depends on maturity levels. My boyfriend is 3 years older than me and I'm the responsible, mature one in the relationship.

I used to be really picky about age until I met a 30 year old that I like. (I'm 26) That was always my "old" limit, but really that's ridiculous. Age is just a number.
