What is cool?
What should it look like?
What do you like on sites that you think they might like?
Please keep it clean!!!
BTW I have absolutley no idea myself.
I am not a web designer...just something I happen to have gotten involved in.

There are tons of layouts out there on the Internet, you just need to know how you want to design it. It's difficult for me to make layouts, a good imagination can create wonders when it comes to web design.

I would have to say "ask them" or give us more details on subject matter, any groups you might be appealing to etc. One thing I would say is look at professional sites and then look at Myspace sites customised by the user. Then avoid what most do like putting dark writing on a dark background and vice versa. Trying to appear too cool resulting in a loss of legibility. Make it easy and intuitive to navigate. Provide links to music and vids etc. But describe them and give screen caps rather than just a hyperlink.

Just saying what I like and don't like, but then I am considerably over 17. I think though that the same rules apply. We still like things to work with our senses rather than against them.

I agree try looking at user profiles on MySpace. But people make the mistake of putting dark writing on a black background. Also transparency is something that is becoming a little annoying and people tend to use it in their profiles WAY too much.

If you need to use a little transparency in your design layout try not going too wild on it to the point you can't see anything.

We really need more information if we are going to be able to give some ideas. What is the aim of the site? Social networking? Web app? Pure information?

The web designer you employ should be able to help with ideas as they would know what works and what doesn't.

Young people tend not to like lots of text. They like funky images and cool colours. Personally I hate Flash but kids tend to like it with the animation.

well it a police web site providing information but we did some research. They didnt want it connected to the main police web site- they wanted it to not to have too much text.
We obviously need to provisde information in a concise way.
I have looked at youtube and like the buttons they use for videos.
www.pepys.org is a good site but for me it is a bit too much information overload.
we have also got some graphics based on gta- without the violence.
The research also said they liked the bbc web site and dr who.

So the brief is to provide info whithout it being too police looking- fun and one that they will want to look at- games- downloads- and a bit cool though not patronisingly so.
Also worth going on regularly even though its a police one.

1. You say your not a web designer!
2. Since your not what program are you going to use? (Dreamweaver and Adobe GoLive are the most common to use.) Making buttons is a whole other issue also.)

If your not a web designer and probably do not have the correct software, you are going to be limited as to what you can do!

1. I would do a google search for teen websites and see what is out there...
2. If you need a basic design, you can buy a template for about $50.00 online. Just realize you will still need software to change it and add to it.
3. Visit other police sites and see if they have a teen section also.

I would do little text, lots of pictures, and links if needed to 'educate' the teens going to the site.

Good luck mate! Let us see what you do!

A police website for under 17 yr. olds?

A bunch of buff, nude cops would be cool!

Just some advice. If you've never designed any websites before, don't try and do it yourself. Get an experienced web designer in.

There are tools out there which allow you to create sites but they are only really good for personal sites and I can almost guarantee that any site made in a few minutes in a WYSIWYG would be a complete failure. There is so much more to designing a website than positioning a few elements. Visual design is extremely hard to get right as well as all the technical aspects such as browser compatibility, usability and accessibility.

Good luck!

Thank you for those who have contributed so far.
Great ideas and really appreciated!!!!
