i've had sex with 3 different people these past 2 weeks. mostly with protection. and today im really sick. i was feeling a little sick yesterday. but today whatever i have really took off. i seriously hope i didnt get hiv or anything. i have a pretty bad soar throat and tired and funny. i also sense a fever coming on. =/

Loki that is not necessarily true. It used to be but now you can get a P24 test after a week and it can give an indication. It has a limited window though.

Breakfast, I agree that you probably got a cold... you would not react that severely to HIV infection for a bit...hell it isnt even detectable in some cases for months...

I would alter your plans from mostly safe sex to SAFE SEX.

See an MD. If need be, he can prescribe one of the AIDS drugs as a morning after prophylactic. But you've probably got nothing to worry about.

For the record, if you're scared you have an STD, you go to your doctor. Not to an Internet chat forum.

Once you tell your doctor that you have a sore throat that you think is HIV and he stops laughing, he might suggest that you get tested - like any sexually active adult should - for stds regularly because many go unnoticed but are totally treatable. But treating them takes a few days of antibiotics, not posting to a forum.

And he also might suggest that you're not mature enough for having sex if you can't deal with taking responsibility for your health like an adult should.

By the way... Do you mean unprotected anal sex or do you mean "he sucked my dick and I wasn't wearing a condom?"

Because you can transmit HIV one of those ways but not the other.

today's even worse. =/ mega soar throat and feel sick as hell. and i have finals tomorrow. fml! i'm getting tested on monday. thats the only day i'll finally not be busy.

Dude, you do not have HIV.

HIV doesn't give you a sore throat in 2 weeks. It usually takes years for untreated HIV to manifest symptoms. Not days.

And you know that your REAL problem is that you had sex and are having the guilts about it. Cut it out. It's your dick and you should use it how you want. Don't let silly societal guilt do this to you.

Soilwork, you are incorrect.

I don't want to scare the OP but mocking the OP and his concern for his wellbeing & health is not appropriate. Furthermore, there may be information that may not be sharing with us, because he may be feeling guilty, scared, afraid of being judged, etc etc. Maybe there is more to the story that he does not wish to share in a public forum.

Acute HIV infection CAN give produce flu-like symptoms, with a sore throat. This is called the "Acute retroviral syndrome" or "Acute seroconversion syndrome" and occurs anywhere from about 2 weeks to 6 weeks after exposure to HIV.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acute_seroconversion_syndrome

It is during this time that the body is starting to recognize that HIV is in the body, and the person who is newly HIV infected may experience something similar to a bad cold or a bad flu (with fevers, sore throat). Some people who are newly HIV positive may NEVER experience these symptoms -- or they may just think they had the cold or the flu.

If you suspect you are at a high-risk for HIV infection, I would urge you to see a doctor (preferably a gay-affirming doctor) who will ask you more in-depth questions. Be as honest and open as you can about your recent sexual exposures & complete medical history with your doctor.

If he or she thinks you may have contracted HIV, they might recommend running an HIV PCR RNA test. This test typically detects HIV within 2 weeks after contracting HIV. This is the test that the porn industry generally uses.

The regular (Western blot) HIV test detects your body's response to HIV (not the virus itself), and is more accurate for detecting if you are HIV positive based on exposures 6 weeks ago or prior. This is the test that is most commonly given to the public.

If you suspect that you accidentally got exposed to HIV within 3 days ago (72 hours) -- let's say that you were having anal sex with a man who you were fairly certain or knew was HIV positive, but the condom broke -- if you go to your local Emergency room or doctor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE -- they may be able to give a month's prescription of HIV medication. This is called "HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis" (PEP). Some studies have shown that people accidentally exposed to HIV who went on HIV medication immediately after being exposed, were likely to remain HIV negative. For people who started taking HIV medications 3 days (72 hours) or more after infection, there appeared to be no benefit with taking the medications vs. not taking the medication, in terms of staying HIV negative.

Most likely, I hope that the OP just has a case of the regular cold or run-of-the-mill flu. But I thought I would give more information in case the OP or anyone else wanted it.

Wow. Bizarre.

I'd read about a seroconversion "flu-like" thing but it was more of an urban legend. Seems to be a bit of a split on how common it is, some say quite, others say not very.

And even the links I can find can't decide on how fast it can happen.. some say 5 days (?!) and some say 6 weeks or more.

Either way.. until we find out what this "mostly safe" sex he had was, (usually on JUB they're talking about getting or giving a blow job without any cum) and until he sets his mind at ease by getting tested, it's kinda silly to panic.

and in fact... pointless to panic. No point in being "so scared' about it since (a) being infected with HIV isn't a death sentence anymore and hasn't been one for years and (b) panic doesn't do anything but cause more panic.

Actually HIV can cause symptoms after 2 weeks and it's called symptoms of "acute/primary infection." http://hivinsite.ucsf.edu/hiv?page=basics-00-02 These symptoms are so similar to common colds and flu that there is no way of accurately diagnosing HIV until the person has an HIV test at a proper time. After those symptoms disappear, many people do not show any signs for years. The flu like symptoms and sore throat are not only for HIV; even herpes and oral gonorrhea can cause these similar symptoms. Testing at 2 weeks for HIV is early. Most places will tell you that tests start picking up HIV at 6-8 weeks post exposure and prefer that the person retests after 3 months when 99% testing will accurately work.

I don't think he is feeling "guilty" about having sex because of societal guilt. The guy is scared like any person would after developing common symptoms associated with STIs after having sex. It's only natural that people fear STIs, especially when they don't use protection all the time and rates are high in the gay community.

To the OP, don't be stressed and don't over read about symptoms online. Self diagnosing is the worst thing that you can do because it only creates unnecessary stress. I was in you shoes earlier this year. I developed flu like symptoms after having (safe sex) and I started freaking out and playing doctor on the internet. I went and got tested for HIV and other STIs and everything came back negative. I went back to retest in mid November (about 6 months after) and all came back negative still. It is most likely that you just picked a cold/flu. It's December and every 3rd person is walking around with runny noses, sore throats and coughs. I've been coughing myself for past month trying to fight my bronchitis. The only sound advice is for you to go to a doctor and be open with him or find a gay friendly STD testing clinic and test at their recommended period.

You're coming down with a cold. If you're really concerned, see your doctor.

The only clear signs of something fishy and STD-like going on down below is if you get any open sores, severe rashes, or anal/penile discharges.

Flu-like symptoms like a sore-throat is not nearly enough to worry that you contracted an STD like HIV. But because you stated that you had "mostly" safe sex, that warrants a trip to the doctor, even without symptoms, to get screened.

I advise you to always be safe in the future if you are going to worry about things like this.

If you have had unprotected sex with a strange getting a STD test is a good thing. But as most people has said you are more likely to have got a cold or flu.
