for anyone who cares, i found this interesting - though not surprising.

“Last weekend I had a long, leisurely breakfast with one of Hollywood’s most notable studio chiefs,” writes O’Neil in his blog for the awards-oriented L.A.Times site The Envelope. “While we chatted casually he said, in between the lattes and bagels, matter-of-factly what we all know but seldom admit out loud: ‘Of course, Brokeback Mountain didn’t win best picture because of the gay thing.‘”
O’Neil continues:
He’s an academy member, seasoned Oscar veteran, a “str8″ chap, as the lingo goes, and not affiliated with Brokeback.
“I couldn’t believe how many academy members even refused to watch it,” he added, shaking his head.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that we saw the secret, ugly side of Hollywood when the best picture winner was announced.
I’m not saying Crash wasn’t a great film, no, no, but that’s not why they voted for it. Look, I’ve been in this Oscar game long enough to know how to read these things. Believe me. What we saw was a disgusting display of anti-gay bigotry. Yep, in so-called liberal Hollywood.”

I doubt it. That movie was everywhere last year. In my opinion there were better movies that didnt receive as much recognition because they got swallowedd in the Brokeback hype. If anything, I think the Ang Lee picture that deserves more accolades is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That film is a masterpiece. Its way better than Brokeback could ever hope to be. Crash deserved its win. It was the best picture of 2005.

That doesn't explain Ang Lee winning Best Director, or in fact, the 10 nominations it got. If Hollywood was *that* homophobic, they wouldnt have nominated it. Even Hollywood legends like Jack Nicholson voted for Brokeback Mountain.

The actual reason Crash won is that the majority of Academy members are actors, and Crash was an actors film. Simple as.

I don't agree with him. Crash was truly the better film of the two. Even though i did like Brokeback Mountain, it didn't have the same kind of sucking-in power that Crash did. Also, the acting in Crash was far superior than that of Brokeback Mountain.

Obviously I must have watched different movies from the ones some of you saw.

First, I saw Crash on DVD well before it was nominated, and I thought it was merely so-so, another one of those LA stories depicting various lives and plot lines that eventually merge. It's been done several times, and was, therefore, derivative of past efforts.

Brokeback, on the other hand, was original as well as beautifully filmed and touchingly sad. All the lives ended in one kind of tragedy or another. It was almost Greek in that regard.

There is no doubt in my mind that the better film lost for whatever the reasons may be.

I thought Crash was forced and obvious, full of charactures.

But I'm not a fan of Ang Lee.

His movies are stupid and boring.. His movies are ridiculous and over-stated.

I thought Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was one of the most insipid movies I ever saw, and I think anyone who liked it is a brainless turd.

But that's just me.

My exact opinion on Crash, Jasun. But as far as Crouching Tiger, Brainless Turd comment goes, I must now throw down the gauntlet and challenge you to a cage match.

I love that film, as I did Hero and House of Flying Daggers, and I'm looking forward to Curse of the Golden Flower. Crouching Tiger opened my eyes to epic films the likes of which Hollywood does not make...graceful, violent, loving, heroic, and magical.

I know I'm not brainless, so I must now risk life and limb to fight you to the death. Whatta ya say...naked jello kick-boxing? :)

Sorry.. but every Ang Lee movie has been about spineless whiners.

The Wedding banquet about a spineless gay man who ruined his own life just so he didn't have to tell his parents to back off.

the Ice storm was about a bunch of spineless whiners stuck in a house.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was about an annoying, whiney, irritating martial arts warrior who's does nothing but lament how rough her life is. I was so happy she killed herself at the end of the movie so I didn't have to hunt down the actress and do it myself.

Brokeback Mountain too was about spinless men who used women as cover.,

Oh, and Hulk was about a mutant booger who turned into a spineless whiner when he calmed down a bit.

Now go get the fucking jello and take your medicine, stud.

I think Brokeback Mountain was as exquisitely directed, carefully crafted, and well acted with a brilliant script, one of the best movies I have ever seen, and certainly the best movie of the year. Crash was too meandering and while well intentioned not on Brokeback's level.

I have no doubt believing that Brokeback was done in by homophobia. The fact that it got nominations - those are easy enough to award when deserved - and that Ang Lee got best director was a sop for his movie being screwed out of the Oscar.

Not since Rocky has a movie won so few other awards as Crash did and yet win Best Picture. The fix was in.

In my opinion.

If the academy is so "homophbic" why did so many gay films win awards in the past, and last years Oscars? Last year, Phillip Seymour Hoffman (I think thats his name) won for his role in Capote, there was also the actress who one for playing a transvestite (I forget the name of the movie).

The simple fact is, in the academy's opinion, Crash was simply the better movie. Think what you will of the movie, or of Brokeback, but this claim of Homophobia being the reason Brokeback didnt win is just garbage.

Crash should have won plain and simple. Brokeback Mountain was a good moviem but Crash was better. Sorry

This seems to me to be a little like people who complained about Barbra Streisand not being nominated for Yentl or the year that no African-Americans were nominated until Halle Berry won Best Actress.

IMHO, I'm offended that Field of Dreams didn't win Best Picture.

A4A

Ummmm  - Barbra SHOULD have been nominated, NO question..... so don't muddy the waters unneccessarily, bro - stick to the topic at hand... CRASH ultimately sucked but looked great. As to BBM who knows - I for one am proud of all it achieved !

ok it doesn't matter which movie was better - like everything else, it's a matter of personal taste and opinion. that's not the point. i was interested in the fact that members of the academy refused to even watch BBM - how can you come to fair decision on who should win the oscar if you don't even watch the nominated films?

i just think that if you're on a judging panel you need to be more open minded and less driven by your personal views - which, unfortunately, isn't the case with most analytical, pseudo intellectuals

It was all petty politics that favoured Crash. Brokeback was another runaway production filmed in Canada with a smallish crew while Crash was made in LA with a large cast and crew. There hasn't been an outcry like this since Marisa Tomei won an Oscar. The other award shows all got it right. Crash was trash.

The fact that 12 Monkeys and Fight Club didn't win best picture and Bjork didn't win best original song for "Army of Me" from Tank Girl is proof that the Oscars are Bullshit anyway.

But Ang Lee is still a shitty direcctor who makes movies about whimps.

i still think fight club was one of the best movies ever made, its a shame it didnt win anything. it was so witty, hell, brad should have at least won something for that bod of his....LOL

and twelve monkies was awsome, and on a different level that so many dumbasses fail to see it for what it is and pass it off as some "weird time travel" movie. god i hate ignorant people.

Brokeback was great, Crash was probably the 6thfilm with the same structure and confronted people will the shocking truth that they all already knew.

Now, as for Ang Lee, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is not just about that girl. watch it again, and why not read the books while you're at it. Come on, Jasun.

The Wedding Banquet gave perspective into the experience of gay asian men. He doesn't ruin their lives, and he does tell them. Heaven forbid he be hesitant for a period in his life.

He also directed Sense and Sensibility and Eat Drink Man Woman, which is a great movie about a father and the lives of his three daughters...

He is one of the most celebrated Chinese directors, and not because he's one of the few globally recognized directors, but because his work is fantastic. He knows what he's directing.

And what more could he have done with the Hulk? The movie was doomed to begin with. At least he gave it as much depth as he could.

If he only made movies about wimps, then the characters wouldn't get anywhere in the end. Wai Tung tells his parents. If he was a wimp, he wouldn't have told them at all.

And the girl in Crouching Tiger can't live. She doesn't do it because she wimped out. She exists in a society that cannot tolerate her existance. She refuses to resign herself to the life of a docile wife/daughter, her father is a wealthy merchant but she's in love with a bandit (bandits who actually do not have any place for a woman in their lives) and she's not the kind to become an astute martial artist (and she's not a 'warrior martial artist', she's just a girl and many of the aristocracy knew martial arts only to protect themselves. The only two warriors were probably Jade Fox and that bandit). She has to die.

If everyone was so strong that they were able to do everything they should do, then there would never be any dramtic plot or need for sympathy. Movies about people who are self-actualized and never fail are pretty boring and unrealistic. The question is, where and when do people who don't have that innate courage find it within themselves to make a stand. That's the human condition. And I applaud Ang Lee for representing that.

If you want movies about people who never go wrong, just watch a Rambo film or something.
