A tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of petrol caught fire under a freeway overpass.
The resulting explosion caused a section of the I-95 overpass to collapse.

I saw that on the news today. Any time Interstate 95 shuts down it's a huge headache for drivers.

It's still dangerous, there's the possibility of reigniting the area under the collapse.

I-95 is the major north-south corridor along the east coast. The hit to commerce will be serious.

Interestingly, Modern Marvels re-ran an Engineering Disasters episode last night including the previous I-95 fire and closure decades ago. That time, burning tires were involved.

And the interstate was closed for weeks that time.

Let's hope it gets reopened quicker than I-40 did with the bridge inspection fuck-up a couple of years ago at Memphis.

Some re-route's greasy spoon diner is about to get a helluva lot of business this summer.

This will take forever to rebuilt.

Normally with government projects I would agree with you - but the I 95 is the main North South artery for the East Coast - I suspect they are going to get on it FAST.

What also may help is I heard that bridge had been rebuilt not that many years ago - so perhaps they have plans for the bridge that already meet current building codes.

It took forever to fix one stinking crack in the I-40 bridge at Memphis, and it is surely one of the heaviest East-West corridors for shipping in the nation. The federal government didn't even lift a finger. It was state government that repaired it.

Let's hope the I-95 being near the power center of the nation will get better service.

Mayor Pete was here and promised to speed repairs.

I'm glad to be off for ten days...and I didn't work in Northeast Philadelphia this week anyway.

Where was/is Mayor Pete and Biden over the East Palestine, Oh. train derailment?

I wonder what role the federal government has in railroad maintenance. Unless I'm mistaken, the rail companies themselves own the rails and land, but the traffic is subject to federal regulations, and state.

The interstate highways are the direct creationi of the federal government, maintained by the states via federal dollars.

So, it makes sense the Secretary of Transportation makes an appearance when the interstate has a crisis. He also spoke to some derailments, but I don't think the government maintains railroad beds, or the states, but there may be exceptions.

I'm glad Josh Shapiro is governor. I bet his opponent, Doug Mastriano, would just let it go unrepaired, since he's from rural Franklin County and you know how Republicans love cities.
