I want to by a new set of iPhone earbuds and I found really nice ones that aren't so expensive but the package lists the devices they work with and it does not include the iPhone 4, which is what I have. It does include the iPhone 3GS.

My question is, are iPhone 3GS earbuds compatible with iPhone 4? I would imagine they are, but I just want to know for sure since the store has a no-return policy for opened merchandise.

Thanks.

Apple would like people to believe that only their magical earbuds will work.

In reality, any 3.5mm headset/earbuds will work.

I hate the iPhone earbuds they hurt like a motherfucker, so I am using the ones my brother gave me they feel and sound better than the iPhone ones.

There's no technical change between the headphone socket in any model iPhone, so if it's compatible with one, it's fine in the other.

All 3.5mm stereo headphones work in an iPhone socket.

The difference between truly compatible headsets is the addition of a microphone and button. Apple's iPhone headset have these extra features, which allow handsfree calling. The button can be used to answer and end calls, and to pause and restart iPod playback. Check third party headsets for these features, as they are often not included.

Every headphones hurt like hell. I have $40 Bose headphones that fit around my whole ears and they still hurt like shit.

I ended up buying some Panasonic, for like $25. They have the microphone and the volume up/down buttons. hey sound pretty decent.

Thank you all for your help and comments!

I have some that were like $60 dollars and they do not hurt at all, maybe your ears just aren't use to earbuds.
