I'm surprised no one at JUB has mentioned this before, but apparently the iPhone has secret files that track your location, and keep files on your iPhone as to where you've been.

Is this as serious as it sounds? I don't think I feel comfortable with it at all:

There was an issue that Apple updated the phone to take off some sort of feature that tracked your location. People jumped on their asses about this location thing on the phone so they tried to release a new firmware update which removed it.

A lot of the apps track your location that's why the Location icon in the upper right hand corner appears when an app is trying to find your location. If this sort of thing scares you go back to the retro looking phones that have no GPS tracking.

I don't know about you but I would NEED this kind of feature so I can track my phone just in case it gets stolen or missing.

If you need a source that they removed it here you go.

Yeah, this issue was some months ago. Apple updated the iPhone firmware so that the tracking log is no longer stored. So long as you've updated your iOS software in the past few months you will not be affected.

Meanwhile, just today Microsoft are facing similar criticism, but worse. A proposed class action says Microsoft intentionally designed camera software on Windows Phone 7 OS to ignore customer requests that they not be tracked.

I heard about this, yeah. But Apple has fixed it and claimed it as an "error" I believe. It was a bit weird. >.> 1984-esque, haha.
Yes, I just read that book, so I feel like referencing it!

yeah, they fixed it after weeks of angry customers and press. but until then they remained silent .. as usual. probably needed some story to the people ;)

As I recall it was more a media hype thing. It recorded the cell towers the phone had logged into to help it pick them up quicker next time. If any authority wishes to find you they can do it very simply from your network's log of cell towers which will be more accurate as they can triangulate your position, and, of course, they also store a log.

So basically media induced paranoia!

You need a court order here too in theory. However if authorities believe there to be a pressing reason why they should do it then they can. A friend of mine was tracked and found for just these reasons. I'm sure your dept of terrorism ( Homeland Security?) can do just the same.

Yeah if any kind of terrorism is detected they will get the phone logs, it's a very serious thing and they will do anything in their power to get what they need.
