Hi all,

am thinking of getting an iPod or similar but there really does seem to be a baffling array of things to buy! I'm not clueless when it comes to technology but when it comes to searching for these things on the internet I have little idea what they're on about.
Could anyone that has one or knows about them please tell me what they may think would be suitable for me?
Basically I have reasonable sized cd collection but being the tad bit anal that I am I like really good quality sound! The thing that is putting me off iPods is that I've heard the sound is a bit crap.
Anything constructive from users of ipods or similar would be welcomed.
Thanks!
Thom.

You could save your CD's in iTunes as Apple Lossless, Get an iPod and upgrade your earphones. Remember that Apple Lossless doesn't compress nearly as much as MP3 so if you want to have lots of tunes with you, get an iPod with a hard drive.

On the other hand, if you want the coolest device around get the iPod touch. It looks and acts like an iPhone but without the phone or camera.

Just remeber if you save it in a lossless format that it will chew through the battery faster

but what do you actually want?

How much music do you have?

Videos?

do you want a large screen? small screen? no screen?

if you want a small flash player 2,4,8gb
there is the iriver clix

the touch has wifi but the samsung has bluetooth so it depends which one you would use more i would use bluetooth more since you can sync your phone and answer calls throught the mp3 player use bluetooth headphones and speakers and such where as the ipod only allows you to connect to the internet with wifi which for me would only be at home since there are no free wifi hotspots here the other samsung has bluetooth to

hdd players

there are only a couple
i would consider the ipod classic or the zune and thats it the new 80 gb zune comming out next month looks really good and the screen is quite a bit larger than the ipod

I would say an ipod touch, but thats the only mp3 player I've ever had.

I hav an ipod, Im Gonna Get The Zune, cuz the ipod is getting kinda boring!

Firstly many thanks for all the info guys!

I have about 100 cd's but would not need to put them all on. I'd still like room to buy more music. So far I'm thinking the iPod classic is looking good but a friend has recommended the nano pod!!!
I do have a decent pair of ear phones so would not need to use the iPod ones, at the moment am not overly fussed about having video but I'm sure once I get started if I don't have it i'll want it!!
Thanks again for all your advice, will let you know what I decide on!

Your best option (in my opinion) is to get a new phone with an mp3 palyer! There cheaper than iPods and ALOT more useful.

You can get a phone thats better than the iPhone and iPods for around £50 in England.

You can have my Sony Ericcson W810i. It's a piece of shit. Frustratingly complex to use.:grrr:
If you need radio get the iPod touch and listen to internet radio if you are in a wifi zone.

Oh them Sonys are nice! i like using them anyway! Why are iPods so popular? There useless when compared to most other items!

The reason my Sony is up for grabs is cos there is no way of d/l music to it from an old Mac.. I even went out and bought a Sandisk card reader, stuffed the card in it and hooked up the usb cable to my computer. It did not mount. I went into disk utility and saw it but could not dismount it. So I unplugged it. And my drive volume vanished. I used various utilities to recover it. Turns out it broke the volume wrapper so I repaired that and recovered 12 folders. The folders were empty so i reformatted the drive and did a backup to it. Time out? 1 day. Don't expect me to try again. The support guy told me to use the card reader on a PC. 2 problems there. I don't know anyone that still uses one and I have 12 gigs of music on this one. Oh yeah, he asked me if my phone card was plugged into the card reader. Note that the card reader said compatible with Mac. For sure! It had a driver for system 9 which is ancient history.

Thank goodness for daily backups.

The iPod? Just plug it in and it works. Either platform. Easy to use.

Think about this for WHEN you get a Mac computer.

I would agree with live and noels... iPods are all hype. Now if you have an iPhone already, you don't need anything, you already have an ipod, you certainly don't need another.

I too, would say it's probably the best idea to get a cell phone with an MP3 player, just so you don't have to carry around more crap. But if you can't, or it won't have enough space, the creative zunes are pretty nice. So are the SONY's.

Try ebay for a brown zune. The last time I looked there were dozens with $1.00 bids and a couple of minutes remaining. When it quits start a class action suit against Microsoft:twisted:

And to the iPod bashers, sales were up again. I guess cachet counts.

I've had my SONY mp3 player for 3 years, and it works perfectly well.
I don't know one friend of mine that hasn't had trouble with their ipods.
Mac AND PC users; Each of them having to send it back to Apple to get a new one, upon multiple ocassions.
Never heard of complaints such as this with other mp3 devices.

Although I dislike ipods, terribly, this is not a hate thread.. Just telling you, each of my friends who went to buy an ipod has returned it to be fixed, and then given up with them, and got a different device that has given them no problems.

If I didn't have my SONY, I would say iRiver or the sister company iAudio is the way to go. You get Sennheiser headphones as standard (which are better than any other free headphone), and better than most you can buy in the high street shops too. The interface aint that hard, and after a week it becomes just as easy to use as an ipod.

Find any random sample of "techie geeks" and audiophiles and they will all have either an iRiver or an iAudio - they know what they are buying and do all the geeky research so we don't have to.

Glad we see eye-to-eye.
I also agree about the w810i, too.
Never had a problem! Easy to use! - Know a few friends with the same phone, too. ..|
