...Where we MUST change characters that are not originally white, to white characters?

I really dont care, but everytime I see that speed racer commercial and i see emile Hersch it bothers me a little bit...I mean, shouldnt the bulk of the characters be asian? Are there really NO Asian-American actors out there? Would it really affect the box office if they did that?

I'd like to think there arent people walking around saying, "oh i cant go see that speed racer film, cos there not white." I mean were far from that, i hope.

Maybe because there arent enough high paid asian actors to bring in people? Who knows, just an observation.

Speed Racer and just about everyone else in the original program was white/western. Early Japanese animators had a tendency to westernize their cartoon characters. it was no different with Robotech, Transformers, Voltron, etc. The characters were white in the cartoons themselves, it's not an American conspiracy.

lol Hey I didnt say it was a connspiracy. But thanks for letting me know that. They do a terrible job at westernizing those cartoons but now that I think about it, alot of it was cartoony imatation.

Going into jerk mode:

1) There aren't any black or Asian actors capable of blockbuster performances?
a) Sidney Pointier, Halle Berry, Lawrence Fishburne, Lena Horn, Richard Williamson, Isaiah Washington (grudgingly), Lee Thompson Young, CCH Punder, Kyla Pratt, Telma Hopkins: Ten other black actors/actresses who can deliver great performances.

b) Jackie Chan (when he actually bothers trying), Yun Fat Chow, Lucy Liu, Michelle Yeoh, Toshiro Mifune, Pat Morita, Bai Ling, Rosalind Chao, Joan Chen, Ming Na, and Susan Park: Some Asian actors/actresses, all of whom are famous for blockusters.

Wanna try that again?

2) It would be extremely difficult to imagine Harry Potter being black, especially given how well developed his, er, whiteness is. But you are right in that there needs to be more black scholarly characters; it's just that there hasn't been a whole lot of success with them, and that always makes Hollywood nervous about profitability.

3) You may want to consider that a lot of that pigeon-holing is due to the efforts of that community itself. In the Asian community, actors tend to show up in a lot of different genres; for some reason, American critics prefer actors to stay within one genre. It's not that hard for an Asian actor to portray a hero, a villain, a thug and a prostitute all within the same year, mostly due to sheer number of movies produced each year. In other words, there simply aren't any actors famous for the cooler dramatic roles because no one does ONLY dramatic roles (or, more accurately, few do roles that are only dramatic).

In the black community, there has been an emphasis on comedies (Spike Lee and Richard Townsend) and gangsta movies (John Singleton) over more critically important movies (Melvin van Peebles). It doesn't help that the NAACP itself has created some issues, such as the threatened strikes in the mid 90's (they wanted shows with black actors to have black writers; this backfired as black characters just weren't as popular after that (as noticed by the whitening of TV at the time)). In essence, there aren't a lot of non-gangsta non-comedic roles because either there isn't interest in the black community itself, or they are shot down when they appear from non-black writers.

Not trying to be a jerk, but the black community does a pretty good job of isolating itself from the rest of the art community. If you really want to see more mainstream success, then you need to stop doing the "We want to be silly gangstas" act and then getting annoyed when there aren't any serious movies for blacks; it's hard NOT to understand given black movies over the last decade or so...

I'm not a fan of anime but in every cartoon I've seen, most of the characters look western to me.

Re: Is America still at a point....(Speed Racer)..

boo-hoo. What's from stopping Japan from making a Speed Racer film with a Japanese actor playing the lead role? Problem solved. Athough I would imagine they would call it Mach GoGoGo which is the original name.

Re: Is America still at a point....(Speed Racer)..

Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu and Ming Na ring any bells whatsoever? How about Jet Li? Chow Yun Fat? Each one of those actors has been in a lead role, has headlined by themselves, and has a rather impressive string of hits here in America. But that's just not convenient to the point, now is it?

And, if you think that John Cho has only been in a supporting role, you're one of only a few people that hasn't heard of either Harold and Kumar movies...

And I need to add Denzel Washington and Taye Diggs to the list of black actors.

Sorry; I'm just getting tired of hearing about all of the institutionalized racism, and it usually comes down to there's a need for more non-white writers, and for the various ethnic organizations to let white writers use ethnic characters. The NAACP started the ball rolling when it threatened to boycott the various networks unless they had black writers for every show that had black characters. And then the other ethnic organizations joined in.

The networks looked for non-white writers; everyone looked. Hardly any were found. In order to head off the boycott, two steps were made: The elimination of the offending characters and the creation of writing programs geared towards creating more non-white writers.

The question is not "Is America at a point where we must change the skin color of someone to white?"; the question is when will writers be allowed to use whatever characters they want, when casting directors can cast who they think is best for the part, and production companies allowed to make the movies they want to make without having to dodge around the racial minefield. When will people stop looking for excuses why they can't succeed and just throw away the crutches? The only people keeping people down are themselves, and they need to realize that!

Just to answer the OP:

...Where we MUST change characters that are not originally white, to white characters?
In this case, no offense was probably meant. It just probably felt right to go with a white cast more than anything else, especially based on that Speed Racer was drawn white.

I really dont care, but everytime I see that speed racer commercial and i see emile Hersch it bothers me a little bit...I mean, shouldnt the bulk of the characters be asian? Are there really NO Asian-American actors out there? Would it really affect the box office if they did that?
If you didn't care, you wouldn't write anything. There's plenty of Asian-American actors out there; it's just that a casting decision had to be made. If nothing else, Sammo Hung as a mechanic would just be scary...

I'd like to think there arent people walking around saying, "oh i cant go see that speed racer film, cos there not white." I mean were far from that, i hope.
Hardly. We're at a point where the race of a star doesn't matter; when the biggest star in America is black, where Asians consistently do well in the box office, and where anyone can beat up in the newest action flick or anyone can be abused in the latest chick flick, I don't really see race as being an issue....

Is Emile Hirsch white?

Re: Is America still at a point....(Speed Racer)..

If you think anime characters look white you havent seen much "cosplay"(not surprising).

I've seen both white and asian people dress up as say "Cloud" and the white people look far less like him. Anime characters are mainly "asians" who have blond hair and blue eyes. Cause its all fantasy.

Re: Is America still at a point....(Speed Racer)..

Emile always wanted to be a big movie star and from the 3rd grade on that is all he talked about. His best friend Buster was also my best friend and we were/are good friends with each other. He's a genuinely happy person who is very kind and caring and loves life. He's from Santa Fe, NM (or at least he lived there through most of elementary) and moved to LA in the 7th grade to concentrate on his acting career. His first "big" role was on a 3rd Rock episode and I remeber all his friends gathering at our friend Buster's house to watch it. We never thought that he would become the big star he always wanted, but rethinking it, I am not all that surprised that he is on his way. Glad he's doing something he loves and followed his dream.

One interesting story, one year for Buster's birthday we all went over to his house for a typical sleepover and four of us spent the night in a tent. We got ahold of one of our dad's playboys, and were looking at it, all of us in the early stages of puberty, and were all hard looking at the playboy daring each other to measure our dicks with the ruler in the magazine. Of course, Emile volunteered and the three of us stepped out of the tent as he measured. Came back 4 1/2 inches, but again we were just in the 6th grade. Never really got to see it, but always wanted to. I knew from an early age I was gay (about 3rd grade, or at least that's the age I developed an affinity for boys over girls) and one of my first crushes was on Emile. He had perfect hair, a perfect smile, and an awesome personality.

I'll try to find some pics of all of us back in grade school (especially Emile) that I can scan on the site.

Re: Is America still at a point....(Speed Racer)..

they did that with the film 21, it was based on a book about i think mit students and i think a majority of them were asian, but they cast them with white actors, not too sure, saw a thread on it on yahoo movies, i think there are only two asians who play very minor characters
