Is America the hope of the world?

No---some great ideas ---but backward in so many ways.

That. America without the legal system so many million of Americans hate or/and ignore, and without the financial drive that is more inertia from decades and centuries past than a real conscious, modern system, is left to... Trumpism, intellectual confusion and fears, the Bible...

It must be. People are coming to my suburban Pennsylvania, USA township from all over the world. Over 60 languages are spoken by students in our school district. That indicates quite a lot of hope.

No, that's why no one wants to come here.
We have people on rafts heading to Cuba at this moment and others sneaking in to Mexico looking for a better life.

I'm not sure if leaving shitty conditions for moderately less shitty conditions constitutes hope, escaping a lion's den and ending up in a snake pit is more just classic survival mode, I would like to believe hope is greater than that, the belief that life can be more than just "not as shitty as it used to be." Maybe I'm thinking too big? We have the highest incarceration rate in the world, 4% of the world population but 22% of the world's prison population. That's hope? Hope sucks.

I guess you guys are kinda right. America is full of hope. Example, I hope my 12 year old niece doesn't become one of the 1 in 6 women in this country who are sexually assaulted. I hope my nephew isn't gunned down by police for fitting the description of a suspect, or else gunned down by an overzealous neighborhood watch who will subsequently become a national hero for killing an unarmed black teenager. I hope my Muslim friend who just announced his wedding anniversary on FB can go out to dinner with his wife without being heckled by xenophobic ass-hats. I hope that by the time I'm married I'll have all the same privileges and rights as my hetero counterparts.

Damn I was wrong, America IS the land of hope. :gogirl:

I'm not claiming that America is utopia. However, girls are taken in marriage at 12 in some countries, boys are made to dress and dance as girls ( and give sexual pleasure) for men in Afghanistan.
Try being gay in Russia. Hold a protest at Tiananmen Square in China.

There are ass-hats in all countries. Try complaining in N.Korea.

We have a lot of room for improvement, in that I would agree.

And to Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey... :rotflmao:

Like rats fleeing a sinking vessel. Rumor has it we may build a wall to keep people in!

In fact, from what some Americans are telling in the "change nationality" thread, it seems it has already been built: a fiscal wall, basically

Yes America is the hope of the world. Who else? But we are rapidly destroying the qualities which made us great.

But hope for what? Freedom or socialism and welfare?

That's my point, being better than a third world country with deplorable conditions and immeasurable human rights violations isn't exactly setting the bar, though I guess technically stepping in a small pile of dog shit would be favorable to stepping into a huge mound of dog shit. My point was hope is something I perceive to be grand, much better and higher than "being better than the worst."

The level of "hope" in America depends almost strictly on who you're asking. A WASP who comes from money? A transgender teen from a low income family in New Orleans? That lesbian in Florida whose wife lay dying in the hospital while she waited for friends to fax the "appropriate paperwork" to prove that she didn't deserve to die alone? A woman with 3 kids and 2 jobs living in the projects? An unarmed black man staring down the barrel of a policeman's gun? Very different lives, very different perspectives on hope in America.

But you're right, I guess it's better than being beheaded or sold into slavery, I just thought we were aiming for a lil higher than that.
