Is college worth it?

I think having the college degree is worth it. I have one and not working in what my degree is in. But having the degree as helped me get a better job and more pay. Just having the degree in something can always help.

Oh, and about the money thing... if you're over 25 and are making 26k a year as you state in your OP, you probably qualify for Pell grants and government student loans.

I did my lower-division work in community colleges, then transferred to a state four-year for my upper-division (Junior and Senior years); I had Pell grants that paid for all my tuition and books because I was over 25 and so my parents' income didn't figure in (not that it would make any difference, as they're poorer than I was), and my income for the previous years was well below the poverty level.

I did take out student loans for my time at State, but that was just so I didn't have to work. My total debt was $25k, which is very manageable over a twenty-year period with a variable interest rate capped at 8%.

If you stick to technical training, you'll end up spending more than that because you'll have to be retrained every few years as the technology of what you do advances. And technical schools are almost invariably more expensive than state universities, and a lot of them are pretty shady.
