  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Is it time to rename JUB, JPT "Just Parody Threads"?

Creating a thread mocking or parodying another thread is hardly ever clever (like the handful that will probably follow this thread)

Should I buy a fleshlight?
Should I buy a flashlight?
Should I buy a black light?
Should I buy a Bud light?
Should I buy a "blank" light?

Several threads of "Does "blank" harm the gay community?" based off one serious one.

Are people that bored that they just have to post? Or is it post numbers that are trying to be increased?

I find hitting oneself in the head with a blunt instrument softens the annoyance of such thread. Oh, and there's the stars too. I like the stars.

I've noticed this trend as well. As they've caught my attention I've moved some of them in F&G. Who wants to be ridiculed and mocked for their thread ideas? [rhetorical]

How about splitting Hot Topics into a serious and non-serious offtopic section?

Nah, this one's not interesting enough to be parodied.

Are people that bored that they just have to post? Or is it post numbers that are trying to be increased?
Or is it that they are tired of the constant inane drivel that is posted on a daily basis? One needs to only look at threads like "Does Jesse McCartney Masturbate?" to answer that question.

The original thread usually gets hijacked anyway. That's more of a problem than the parodies, which instead of being moved should be deleted, and warning points given for "flooding".
Anyway posters there have left, and those who remain are less active.

If you look at the code of conduct there's no direct rule that addresses off-topic posts. If the same person is making the satire threads over and over again then it's flooding, but if it is all different people then it's not really the same thing. It's an area that I find really difficult to moderate because a little light-heartedness in a thread is a welcome thing, but the problem is that the conversations will take over a thread in a series of posts. I will consider deleting the thread as well, considering the circumstances.

I tend to ignore the parody threads. Although witty in their creation, they offer little in the way of discussion.

Again, that does not make them any different from "non-parody" threads.

I can already feel this one slipping away.

A storm is brewing.

Again.

i have to say I'm getting rather weary of it.

there was a time when i defended a certain amount of playfull banter in a thread and the occasional parody thread, but it seems to be all that Hot topics is capable of now.

its good to enjoy each others company as we all talk about real stuff, but if we never get to the real stuff, then JUB has gone the way of every other irrelevant board on the internet, more interested in the personalities than the principles

I dont like that idea at all.

perhaps we have finally subdivided the boards so much that there really isnt alot to actually talk about in hot topics.

perhaps hot topics should just be renamed etcetera and be the dump spot for threads that just don't exactly fit in any other forum.

i have often wondered what i would do if I was responsible for the fix, and i honestly cant think of anything, so i do see Melody's point.

either the rules need to be revised, the board needs to be restructured, or we all just need to learn to skip the ones that we dont like.

the hard thing about the titles of the threads is that its hard to figure out which is the real one if you werent reading on the day it all happened. that sucks.

also people dont title threads to match up with the first post at times, and i like to read the first post of as many as posible for that reason. when i have read 20 first posts and there is nothing but BS and bickering, i just close the site.

i am just not in the mood for the nonsense right now, haven't been for weeks, and i'm sure less committed readers of JUb have far less endurance for the nonsense than i do.

I can appreciate that there are those who want to see more substantive material in Hot Topics. Something with more teeth, something that can spur dialogue and the expression of ideas and opinions and yet, the boards are full of these so-called parody threads. It must make some of you all a little disappointed. But have any of you thought that the reason that the majority of those serious threads just don't survive page one because the general population just isn't interested?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to denigrate the contributions of those folks who have made those threads. There has been a rich history of thought provoking subjects all through out. Even the ones with which we roll our eyes because they do make you think.

But you have to wonder why is it that the "fun" threads stick around? I can't answer that one for the whole of JUB. I can tell you that for me it's because I come here to have fun. There is more than enough serious stuff going on in my professional life that when I'm on my down time the last thing I want is to dive into more serious stuff. Could it be that there are more folks out there such as myself? If this is the case, what does it say about threads being moved because they don't fit the ideals espoused by what might be a minority here on the boards?

Eh. I don't know. I'm just rambling at this point. I'm hungry and need to get some lunch.

The problem is too many people have made this forum their hobby and social outlet.

As a result, you get trends, disputes, alternate accounts, a popularity contest, drama, and a forum board that looks less like a forum and more like a chat box.

If we are going to do something about parody threads & hijacks via warning points, should we give warning points to those who cant use the fucking search function?! Particularly when there is already an active thread about the same topic.

It is a very fine line indeed.

One that if it were crossed I'm pretty sure a lot of us would probably stop visiting here.
