Is it wise to install Windows 7 now?

I just got a copy of Windows 7 (€17/$25 via work, whee!). However, I'm not sure if I should install it right away (after backing up my files, of course), as the first version of any Windows OS are bound to have the odd meltdown or so. I'm thinking it may be best to wait until Microsoft releases the first major batch of patches and updates...

Installing Windows 7 now, yay or nea? Any experiences?

Windows 7 is more or less the better version of Vista. So far it has been pretty stable.
I have not heard yet of anybody having major problems with it.

I hope it's the better version of Vista - I've had 0 problems with Vista as it is :D

(and now watch my computer die as soon as I hit "reply")

I have it installed and have two major issues. The first is that when I start my computer the network connection is not always available. Sometimes I have to run the troubleshoot problems application. It finds that I do not have a valid IP address. I have checked to make sure all my drivers are up to date and have contacted my internet service provider and they tell me that I am the only one who has complained about this problem.

The second problem is with my sound device. When i first turn on my computer I have sound but once Windows does whatever it does, I have no sound. Again my drivers are up to date according to Dell, Microsoft and Realtek(the device manufacturer). the only way to get sound is to uninstall the device, re-install or let window discover the device, and then restart my computer.

Because of these two problems I am going to re-install Vista and forget about 7 until I buy a new computer in a couple of years.

I'm running 7, my uni servers are all XP. I've had no problems whatsoever. It's a much more stable first iteration than the last two pre-service pack OS', partly due to the backlash from the unpatched Vista release.

I've had it installed since mid-August, and I haven't had any problems yet. It's pretty much just a better version of Vista. Not that Vista's bad, but Windows 7 is just plain better.

I installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit the second day of general availability. No problems whatsoever. It is fast, stable and has a lot nice features in UI. It also has a virtual XP 32bit mode that gives you run an entire XP subsystem within Win 7. I use this for a couple work apps that won't install in 64bit. So far I'm lovin' it.

My student copy works fine for me. My only problem is with my laptop manufacturer for not having Win7 64bit drivers, or Vista 64bit drivers as those seem to work some times. But everything works and was recognized by Win7. :)

Also, I've been beta testing Win7 for quite some time. never really had much of a problem except for my printer drivers. Which work in the final release.

I'm kicking around upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista... Vista has been nothing but a major pain in the ass! I finally decided to prohibit Vista from EVER updating itself... every time it does its little 'update' it never works properly - then it says nothing is wrong, but it won't work either! Then we have to restore to an early date, only to repeat the cycle!

Thanks Bill Gates! You and all the other fucktards at Microsoft owe me a Windows 7 upgrade!

Want me to tell you what I really think? :p

I haven't had any issues with Vista, maybe its because I didn't upgrade to the new Service Pack.

Since I chose a different install language (have Dutch now, but want English), I can't do an Upgrade. Which means I have to backup every file I have before installing Windows 7. *eyes hard drive* Errr... guess I'll have to buy that external hard drive a bit sooner than I thought.

I am quite happy with my Win XP Pro. Is there any reason that I need Win 7? What will I gain that I do not already have?

If you are happy with what you have now, don't upgrade. I just received free copy as a present the other day and this thing has giving me headache A LOT. I couldn't even get pass setup phrase and it keeps giving me "you don't have require space to install windows 7" message when I have 50GB of free space in that partition. First, I didn't read the requirement notes carefully and thought 11gb free space on my current XP partition was too little for it to be installed. So I formatted it thinking that it would solve that problem. But, that message didn't go away. Now, I restored my old XP image back.

That's weird. I installed my Win 7 Home Premium on a partition that's 15 GB. It didn't give me any warnings.

In my experience 1 year is the proper time to wait after the release of a new Windows OS.
The updates that occur during this time frame address most of the problems encountered by the (Absolutely must have soonest!) crowd.

I've only run Win 7 Ultimate RC 7100, but I can say that it is a massive improvement over both XP and Vista.

Yes it is. I still can't get it work. I even deleted the OSX partition that I had and double check my soon to be win7 partition to see if it was set as active. That didn't stop it from showing that error.

I have always used XP because it was simple and fast. Vista was overburdoned with fancy stuff that would just sow down my computer so I never liked it. Unfortunately for me, my new laptop for school had vista on it and I despised it, so as soon as possible I bought student versions (only 7$!! :D) and updated my laptop. Even though ASUS didn't support my laptop with drivers for windows 7, it runs flawlessly with a little bit of patch work in driver software from other laptop models. Nothing a little google search didn't help me sort out.

Also, since it is winter break, i recently just upgraded my long time XP desktop, and let me tell you, I absolutely love it. I can finally upgrade from 3gigs of RAM to 6gigs now that I run win7 ult 64bit. From my experience and everyone else I know, the upgrade to win7 is painless, pretty quick, and quite stable. It seems microsoft learned a lot from their previous mistake of a child, vista. XP will always have a special place in my heart, but im so impressed with windows 7 that I have no intentions of going back to XP anytime soon.
