the mouth wash they sell in the shops ?

I think this might be the case but would like an expert opinion. :)

I swear by listerene, primarily because it was originaly marketed as a floor disinfectant and the original recipe hasn't changed. Pretty-much bleaches the inside of yer gub.

For standard mouth cleansing purposes, mouthwashes are the best. For sore throats, nothing can beat a warm salt water gargle.

Aren't "throat syrups" for suppressing coughs and not for sore throats? There are lots of good home remedies for sore throats, but I'm not sure how it relates to the original question about mouth washes.

just to rehash an old thread, I have never looked into the science behind it, but all of my relatives that work in medical / science fields are all wary of using listerine too often due to the loose relationship with alcohol and cancer?

In either case I do use listering daily, but usually watered down a bit. I smoke cigars still so if I was worried about mouth cancer the most, I would give up the occasional Cohiba.

I still have a bottle of Listerine but didn't use it because i don't feel it is useful.
Tooth paste can wash mouth during brushing teeth.

My dentist said salt water is better for rinsing than mouthwash. It makes sense when you think about it. Salt kills bacteria and all sorts of nasty things. Look at the Dead Sea... That is also why it is used to preserve things meats etc....

It depends on why you are using it.

Listerine is an antiseptic that was originally used as a disinfectant and for sexual hygeine (the same is true of household cleaner Lysol, by the way).

The advantages of using Listerine is that it will help control some of the bacteria that are associated with plaque buildup and infections of the gums. It's also effective if you have an oral infection such as canker sores or stomatitis, although it tends to burn a bit when applied to open sores.

Mouthwashes have been marketed as a solution to control "bad breath". Effective tooth brushing, flossing, oral rines and tongue scrapers work just as well for this but if you're in a public places a quick rinse with mouthwash is a more practical solution.

However, some of the ingredients in mouthwashes particularly antiseptics and alcohols, do kill growing tissues so if you have an healing wound, a fresh water or mild saline rinse is a better choice.
