I have never had the courage to open my computer chassis. I think its because my computer science teacher told me once that if you touch a motherboard and you shock it with static electricity, the whole thing will be fried.
Where do all u people learn how to DIY your own computers from? Everyone whom i have spoken to seem to have a natural aptitude to doing these things.

For the most part it is the ability to plug things into sockets. A lot of modern motherboards are jumperless. Technically you will not fry your components if you take basic precautions to avoid static. EG. make sure you are grounded and that the board is as well. After that you just need patience as you load the operating system and drivers and the ability to actually read and understand the options you are being presented with.

There are loads of guides on the net to help you.

:wow: CONGRATULATIONS!!!
on the computer upgrade! that's cool.

as the folks above have said. you just have to make sure you discharge any static. a lot of folks wear what's called a wrist strap. i just touch the frame of the computer about 10 times before i touch anything inside. i don't leave it pluged in though, that would freak me out. i have fried a motherboard before..or at least i think i did. it was an old used one i got from a store for 10 dollars and it didn't work when i got home. they say they tested it before they put it out for resale, but...well there ya go. i learned by opening up a very old and not working computer and looked at the stuff and started taking it apart and putting it all back together. at some point there is nothing to lose if your computer is already broken. that was the case with me. there are a lot of good guides out there now and as folks above said most everything is just plug in these days. it's not as hard as it used to be. some things require a bit of force to put in, but that is about it. personally the hardest thing for me is putting the heat sink on the CPU. i'm always afraid i'm going to break the CPU.

the first time you do it, it's good to have a computer nerd with you. ;)

and its super fast! i am really surpised. I had a p4 3.4ghz o/c@ 4.04ghz with 2gig of ram. I am puting that into another pc and got a new c2d e6600 with 4gigs of ram. kept everything else the same and still using xp, and wow! everything loads so much faster and the menus pop up super fast. i wasnt expecting this speed boost, i thought my other hw was fast enough. i plan on upgrading to vista64 once everything smooths out with them.

All that RAM and processing power are no good without a GeForce 8800GTX to complete the triumvirate.

That is if you're a gamer like me.

Sounds like a good setup bigdog! What are you using all that ram for? (You know 32bit O/Ss can only address 3.25GB of RAM right? Until you get Vista x64 (or XP x64) you can only access 3.25GB of that 4GB... The main reason i use XP x64 ;). I have 4GB of RAM for all my 3D modeling and Animation work).

Oh, and o/c that e6600! I have an e6700 and i have it running at 3.333Ghz at 1333MHz FSB! :) You might want to pick up a better CPU cooler for that tho.

What are your full specs? Mobo? Video card? Sound? HDD? Etc...?

i made this a vista ready pc, so in a few months i am upgrading to vista64. i paid 200 for 4gigs ddr2pc8000(1000mhz) crucial ballistix, so i couldnt past it up.

Be a bit cautious when you go to buy Vista. I've heard that what comes in the box is not necessarily 64 bit, and that you might have to send off for and pay more for the 64 bit one. ;)

You have to pay for postage and handling for 64 bit vista if you only buy home premium if you get ultimate you dont need to

Just remember as well as certain advantages of 64bit such as increased RAM limit and extra security. There are disadvantages: 16 bit installers are not compatible with 64 bit, there are still a surprising number of applications using this. Also hardware absolutely requires digitally signed 64 bit versions. There is no Continue Anyway option.

I have to agree. That's the card I put in my partner's desktop PC and IT ROCKS!!!! A little pricey though.
