I was wondering if anyone knew why this illness affects 95% of gay men with AIDS. Straight people with AIDS rarely get it (only 3%); I guess that’s why they called it gay cancer in the 80s. What is it about homosexuals that make them get KS more than straight people? I couldn't find any info on google, which is why I decided to ask here.

You might check out HHV-8. That is Human Herpes Virus 8. It is linked to Kaposi's Sarcoma. It seems that the virus can be transmitted by kissing and sex. I think the percentage of gay men, that have this virus, is quite high, as compared to other groups. I think I have some information on HHV-8, but I will need to hunt for it. I'm going to be busy this afternoon, maybe get time to hunt for it, tomorrow.

People can have HHV-8 and not get Kaposi's Sarcoma. It is the combination of HHV-8 and HIV that triggers KS. All of this is from memory, it has been more than a year, since I searched information on the subject. If I remember correctly, gay men have a high percentage that test positive for HHV-8, like 75%.

If you look at how many different trypes of Human Herpes Viruses, I think it is up to 12. That is from memory. HHV-1 is chicken pox. HHV-2 is gential. It just goes to show that most people have one or more HHVs.

I don't know that there is a clear answer to this. And in africa, it actually is more common in heterosexual HIV + individuals. In the US it occurs primarily in gays, bi's and the female partners of bi's.

The HHV-8 info is correct. My only guess (no facts) would be that there are different strands of the virus and that gays tend to have it more. If that's correct, the str8s should soon catch up. But I'm not sure. It is an interesting question.

i dont believe its common for anyone to get it anymore that is on a cocktail treatment, honestly

where are you getting your info from?

would you please post a link to the source material?

Look it up on google or in an encyclopedia, which will tell you that KS in the U.S. mostly afflicts gay and bi men with AIDS.

Well, obviously those who are taking medication can't develop it, but those who do develop full blown AIDS tend to get it and its usually gay men.
