KDE 4 is now available to Linuxians. This latest incarnation of the KDE desktop includes lots of eye candy, and is said to "put Vista to shame." The KDE core has been completely rewritten, and now features multimedia libraries, better hardware abstraction, and a new file manager.
The new KDE file manager is called "Dolphin", and is essentially a rip-off of Mac OS X's "Finder". Dolphin replaces Konquerer and offers column and split-pane views to make it easier to browse, copy, and move files. A multimedia hood called "Phonon" has been added with many tools to control playback of audio and video files. "Okular" is an integrated document viewer much like OS X's "Preview".
KDE 4 is beautiful, as you would expect. It features many installable themes, including "Oxygen", which attempts to mimic the Mac's glossy windows.
KDE 4 adds many new graphical configuration tools to make management of your system's hardware a snap. Despite the addition of a great many new beautiful graphical features, fancy window details, a powerful new file manager, and much greater automation of hardware management, KDE 4 is actually SMALLER than KDE 3 and consumes FEWER SYSTEM RESOURCES. The new code executes so efficiently that upgrade of older systems to the elaborate and beautiful new graphics of KDE 4 will usually result in a noticable INCREASE in the perforamance of your old computer!
KDE 4 installation packages are already available for some of the major Linux distributions, including Gentoo, Fedora, and Ubuntu.
