I love knoppix. (*8*)

This version came out in Jan, but I didn't see it until today. I'm going to reboot and try it out. :gogirl: I went ahead and got a linux mag at barnes & nobles today and it has knoppix 5.1.1 and Fedora Core 6 (both live).

* OpenOffice 2.1
* ntfs-3g (12.12.2006) for full transparent NTFS write support, also tested with boot options knoppix tohd= and knoppix fromhd=. Please note the hints about ntfs-3g below.
* ntfsprogs-Update (ntfsresize, ntfsmount, ntfsfix)
* integration of 3D desktop beryl+emerald as add-on for KDE (manual start with gnome is also possible), via boot option knoppix desktop=beryl. Please note the hints given below.
* Experimental script for creating a bootable flash-pendrive from a running KNOPPIX live session (mkbootdev by Martin Öhler)

That's the same issue i picked up today. i can't boot to knoppix yet, as i'm download a torrent. i still have an hour to go. =)

Knoppix is my favorite linux distro because it's done everything i've ever needed it to do. my TV card worked with it (ok i think the last version didn't), and all my doctor who avi's worked without me having to do a damn thing. nothing to download at all. my internet worked without me having to do anything, it runs off a USB drive and it has enabled me to get around windows problems that i couldn't fix in widnows. ;) i just love it. I don't know if it will ever surpass Ubuntu, but i think it's up there in popularity. :gogirl:

well i'm having a bit of trouble with this version of knoppix. I suspect as t-rex said some stuff has been left out on this dvd since they the Linux Format magazine folks have also stuff Fedora core 6 on here also. beryl didn't run the first time i booted up and i had a blank desktop (i saw something about AGP failed when it was booting up). but beryl worked on my second boot up. now none of my avi files are playing...which have all played without me having to do anything in the other versions. on the plus side, my sound is working without me having to configure it. so yeah i think i'll need to just download the iso. :lol:

to switch between cube sides the mag said to press ctrl+alt and left click on the desktop and drag.

hey rex, i found firefox on that DVD. it's called "ice weasel" and the mag says on page 68 under the picture on the top left it's due to "trademark issues." although i don't know why? aren't they both open source?

anywho...knoppix locked up on me for the first time ever. i had to do power down the computer. other than that it still is a sweet thing. i messed with fedora, but i didn't like it. i couldn't even find my other hard drives. maybe fedora can't see NTFS partitions?

anywho just thought i'd tell ya where fire fox was, it's the little green frog looking icon on the task bar to the left of the konqueror icon.

has anyone gotten the mkbootdev thing to work? i get an error after several steps into it basically saying some system files or what not weren't found.

^ You and I are the only ones who use Linux, mikey!

Everyone complains about the outrageous price of Windows, Microsoft's ridiculous software activation schemes, the hassles of "Windows Genuine Advantage", the extreme hardware requirements, the security problems, the DRM abuses, the instability, the slow performance, etc., etc., etc. But when you offer them an elegant, powerful, secure, and simple solution to their complaints at no cost whatsoever, they refuse even to look at it.

I think most people actually enjoy bashing their heads against the wall until their brains leak out, and then paying someone an outrageous fortune to rape them and steal their money. Must be grand entertainment for lots and lots of people.

just so you know

vista included drivers for all my hardware except for my wifi which was easy to get drivers and i know for a fact that the drivers for my wifi card are not included in linux

and as for activation the long laborious 30sec to a minute it took to do was almost to much to bear for me

as for a fortune $A170 isnt very much considering that mac OSX costs about the same for their upgrades

obviously you havn't used vista as an operating system as it is very stable and has been able to play every file i have tried

^ I've used Vista plenty. Because of my line of work, I must keep a running inventory of articles on computers and operating systems, and must categorize these. Here, for example, are the first six articles that pop up on the index this AM:

The majority of articles tend to have a negative connotation. Articles across the board on Microsoft/Windows fall into two general categories:

1) Hate articles on how much someone dislikes something about one or both.

2) Business articles on how remarkably well Microsoft and Windows are doing financially.

Only about 10% of articles are positive. If people are so dissatisfied, why do they keep belly-aching that they have no choice? Why don't they do something about it, instead of endlessly saying one thing, and doing another?

And, BTW, AJ, the WGA and SAP and not one time registration deals. Windows contacts Microsoft and reverifies the authenticity of your copy of Windows every time you connect to the internet. What has been irking users is that, a tiny percentage of the time, the verification fails, and shuts down a legitimate user's copy of Windows. It's only a tiny percentage of the time, but since Windows is constantly reverifying, the failures end up upsetting a lot of people!

it seems there are a disproportionate number of aussie articles there which i have noticed whenever you post articles do u use web wombat as a search engine or something ;)

although those boot times there are shocking but mine takes a minute to a minute and a half so whether there using ancient hardware or maybe the only time they restart is after a new app or update requires it which takes longer due to it updating things in the startup process although forced restarts are very rare now when installing new things

^ If you had paid the $800 your copy of Vista Ultimate would have cost you in Ireland, noel, you might feel very differently about the value you got for your money.

that seems like the absolute highest price you would pay if you purchased XP it would only cost $300 for the ultimate upgrade or about $170 for home premium which is everything you need $A670 for full ultimate at RRP i think your estamate is a little high?????
