How easy is it to use puppy linux? Do flash vids play okay with it ?

The best answer to that question is just for you to try it yourself.

It costs nothing and can be booted "live" so that it doesn't interfere with your current OS installation whatsoever. You can boot "live" from a CD or from a usb flash drive. The boot-up can take a minute or two, as everything loads from the disk into RAM at boot-up. After that, it's incredibly fast, however. And the download is only 105 MB.

Like anything new, it requires a small adjustment to learn where everything is located and how to get things done. But it's fairly intuitive. A manual is available, but I doubt you'll need it.

And yes, it will play Flash videos and many other videos straight "out of the box" (many codecs are included with the download).

^ Okay, I'm gonna try this. Do I need to install separate linux video and audio drivers after installing the OS? Or does it just come with all the driver stuff?

The drivers are included, but the installer will ask you what video resolution you want to use for your own combination of video card/monitor. My experience with Puppy is that you can always choose the maximum resolution of which your monitor is capable, even when the installer thinks your hardware might not be able to support it.

Puppy will select and install the audio driver it thinks you need without asking you any questions about it. I've never had it fail.

Similarly, all other drivers (network cards, usb hubs, printers, web cams, etc.) are all auto-detected and auto-installed for you at boot-up. There is almost never a need to get a driver from a device manufacturer. Everything is included in the 105 MB file you download.

Hmm... been using Ubuntu, but it's pretty big for older machines. Downloading Puppy now. I'm going to try it on an old P4 single core laptop.

Alright. I downloaded it and booted from a CD. It connected to the internet without problems and the sound works OK. It does not recognize my video card nor allow me to set the correct resolution. The card is a EVA Nvidia Geforce GTX275. They do have linux drivers so I'm going to try downloading them and see what happens. Actually my computer is brand new and I'm running now 64bit Win7. But my goal is add some life to my sisters 10 year old P.O.S. Dell with XP. So if I can get it work right on my system I'm sure I'll have the experience to get hers working.

Just for fun, I installed Puppy in a virtual PC session within Windows 7. It worked pretty well but video was again the problem.

I'v found older linux distros work better on older machines. like version 4.x of knoppix works better on my circa 2001 laptop than do any of the newer versions. so you might check out a version of puppy from around the time your sister's computer is, may a year or so older. that's just my experience though. others may disagree.

Well I tried to install the NVIDIA driver but no go.

ERROR: Unable to find the system utility 'ldconfig'; please make sure you have 'glibc' installed. If you do have glibc installed, then please check that 'ldconfig' is in your PATH.

So I downloaded a thing called glibc and uncompressed it and put the library in the PATH. There's nothing in there that I can find called ldconfig. And I still can't install the video driver.

...Reboots Windows 7

this is most likely because you need to compile the nvidia driver.
where did you get it? download it from some website? there might be precompiled drivers available with the distribution.
if not see if you can get a "developers tool" package or similar.

yes .. you most definitely then still need the developer tools and probably the kernel headers as well.
