Laptops!!! (Windows Only!)

I'm looking for a new computer too, but a tower to hold all my hard drives full of porn, haha. A friend just told me that there are now 64-bit versions of Vista so that you can utilize more than 2gb ram. Vista is getting a lot more driver and software support, so I'm getting that instead of the 64-bit XPP.

MacBook and MacBook Pro just got a speed bump. You may be able to find the previous model if you act fast. Universities are excellent sources for Macs cos there is little price *wiggle room*. U will need 2 gigs of ram and getting a larger hard drive saves the cost of changing it out later. U should also get a firewire drive THAT WILL BOOT THE COMPUTER if the HD were to fail. Make sure the model u choose will do this. Forget USB. The firewire drive should be 2 to 3 times the size of the computers HD.
go to

for more info.

And, don't even look at the Air. you will sell your mother for one!

man you never learn. i guess you didn't bother to read the full thread title. you could have at least mentioned Bootcamp if you were gonna be a apple fanblah

The OP stated he was interested in Apple hardware:

If I don't like what these companies offer in products i'm going to Apple. Hands Down! lol They have awesome computers.
And there is much discussion of running Windows on Apple hardware in the thread. Sheep's post was completely relevant to the discussion.

firewire drive?

it depends... on your purpose
generally speaking, I'd suggest u to get an intel based non-mac 14.1 widescreen from HP, toshiba or lenovo. Sony sucks at price, mac... what can i say... that 'i'm better than u cuz i use mac' feel freaks me out
dell has decent price but the lack of designing...
fujitsu-siemens is ok under lifebook series
forget other brands

ps: i like practical laptops that is not too heavy with long battery life, so i'd preper an intergrated graphics
pps: please choose t8x00 or t9x00 processors, they are 45nm penryn based

too heavy for me at least
a friend of mine has a hp compaq 6510p, a business model, quite nice

I assume by windows you want to exclude Mac, but if u want good hardware buy a Macbook and put VMware on it with an Windows XP

No, I will still use Apple for certain things. I just found out that the school i'm going to uses a lot of Apple computers so they might use some of the software. I'm now really leaning to Apple cause they have so many features on OS X Leopard. It's So Cool! What is VMware & Fireware?

VMware is an emulator that allows you to run windoze in a window of Mac OSX. You can cut and paste pack and forth. Ideally you would browse and mail in OSX so you don't get bogged down with virii, spyware etc and if you still want to use Office for Windows you can do that in the emulator. You can set windows so that their isnt any internet access.
Parallels is a better known emulator in the Mac World. It makes setup of windows on the Mac very easy. One is better for processor intensive tasks. You need to find out depending on what applications you still have to run in windows. Max out the memory. You can also use Boot Camp which is part of OSX 10.5 Leopard. You can boot into windows and it will run faster than the emulator but not that much different.

Firewire is what windows ppl still call IEEE1394. It's a port like USB 2.0 but for transferring files it runs at its rated speed of 400 megabits/sec as opposed to a MAX of 480 for USB 2.0. If you get a MacBook pro it will have firewire 800. Firewire 3200 is coming. You can also boot off a firewire drive if your computers drive goes flaky. LaCie makes one as does Elephant storage. Make sure you get one that will do this.

Another option is the new Apple's Time Capsule - a combination AirPort base station and networked Time Machine backup disk. It will backup all computers on your network and normally comes with 1 terabyte of storage for $499.

I think I will go with the Time Capsule it's very amazing how it can go back in time and find work you deleted. What's the Pros & Cons to The Macbook & Macbook Pro?

Don't confuse Time Capsule with Time Machine which is part of Leopard. You will still be able to do that with a firewire drive. Time Capsule is a Network Storage Device. It eliminates the need for a wi-fi router. It was primarily designed for the MacBook Air.
The MacBook is designed to be a consumer product while the Pro is for business people that put a lot of miles on their laptops. The case is aluminum, not plastic and it has firewire 800. It may also have room for more RAM.
The Pro model is quite a bit more expensive. Compare the specs to see if you really need it. It is way over your target price range which may be somewhat flexible.

Can I use any External HD with the Time Machine, instead of buying the Time Capsule?

I also like the Macbook Pro more than the Macbook, cause the aluminum case and it's bigger.

Yes, anything that plugs into the firewire or USB 2.0 port that is Mac compatible as most are. The MBP 17" is impossible to use on a plane cos it is so wide but the 15" is ideal.

They both support an extra monitor but the pro model does it out of the box. Also You can use a standard keyboard and mouse at the same time.

I decided i'm going to get the Macbook instead, in black to match my iPod. lol plus it has a bigger HD. I'm also getting the Iomega 500GB UltraMax Desktop Hard Drive for my Time Machine, and getting the VMware.

I prefer VMware over the others mainly becuase of the ease in switching between OS's that and the fact you make a base template windows then copy off that and go for gold on the copy when its turned to trash just make a copy of your templete and your sweet to go, very fast and very easy

I'm still confused about VMware? Do you install VM first on apple's OS and then install windows. Like how does it work when it displays on Apples OS.

You install VMWare onto Mac OS X. When you run VMWare, it will ask you to set up a Virtual Machine. You then put in your Windows installation disk and install Windows, just like you would on a new PC. Its like having Windows running in a window, if that makes sense.

What he said, lol

it just runs in a windows its like having two computers on the one physical computer
