Any of you guys know what's a good black and white laser printer, at an affordable price, with reasonable toner costs, for home use? I'm considering the Samsung ML-2525W, but I can't make up mind.

I'm tired of feeding my inkjet printer expensive ink, when I only print a few pages a month. It wastes more ink than it uses, and need about $100 worth per year.

I use a lexmark E280dn. A toner cartridge is good for 3500 pages, however it is $110.00. Right now, I am a college student so I print a lot. The question is what do you need a printer for?

The entry level samsungs are pretty good. The best for toner cost is probably any of the Brothers, as far as entry level printers go. The cheap HPs have the same problem as their inkjets--cheap printer, expensive toner. Toner is perfectly happy to sit for long periods between printing, so a laser printer is perfect for you.

I have mid-line Brother, and have recommended Brothers to several people and they all like them.

I have an HP LaserJet 1018 and it is a great little printer. I print a lot of sheet music, .pdf, and other documents and it works great. Retail price for HP brand toner is about $65-$70, but if you go with generic refilled toner (like I do) it runs about $20. Lasts quite a while too. Great value.

If you only print a few pages per month, you might want to consider checking out Kodak's ink-jet printers. Kodak employs a different marketing strategy in which their ink cartridges are cheaper than other competitors. (According to Clark Howard, the printer is slightly more expensive, but you save money over time.) I use a high capacity laser printer, but I print lengthy documents on an almost daily basis and need the output to be clean and durable.

Thanks for all the input. I've ordered the Samsung ML-2525W. I found it online for $89 with free shipping. The professional reviews rated it highly for printing performance. The user reviews that were negative nearly all related to problems setting up the wireless networking part. I will be using it with a USB cable, and not wireless anyway. I'm not a big fan of wireless stuff. I know how much of pain the wireless setup they use at work is.

My recommendation would be to go old-school. I still have an ancient HP LJ 5 printer. It's slow as all hell, but the toner cost is cheap and I don't mind waiting a bit for my print jobs. Lexmark also has some old printers still in-use that are available cheap on ebay and have cheap toner costs.
