LaserJet vs. Laser Printers

One of them has the word 'Jet' in its name. Helpful?

You do realise that this will be probably be moved to 'Technology and Computers'?

I think Laser printers are great for text and graphics but they fall short on photos in my opinion. Also, I think you mean inkjet, not LaserJet. The term "LaserJet" is not a protocol. It is a brand name for HP laser printers, which are excellent. Laser printers use toner (a powder), not ink cartridges.

If you do a lot of text and graphics, it's hard to beat a laser printer.

Have fun installing 500MB of useless bloated software when installing HP drivers.

I love my Brother HL-5040 laser printer. You can't get much better than this.

Laser printers blow inkjets out of the water when it comes to B&W printing. Color lasers blow inkjets out of the water when printing on plain paper. But both are more expensive than their inkjet counterparts.

You can generally justify the higher initial cost of a laser because of its cheaper consumables. Also, they're faster than inkjet, and look better. B&W laser printers have come down dramatically in past years. There's a simple entry-level Samsung for around $150, that's quite good. Personally, I'm a Brother lover. (Get your mind out of the gutter). I had a DCP-1000 (multifunction) and upgraded to the MFC-8860DN (multifunction, duplex, network)--absolutely fabulous! Brother makes an entry-level personal laser that's about the same price as the Samsung. HP's are overpriced (especially their consumables) in my own opinion. Laser printers do not "wet" the page, since they use a "dry" ink (toner).

But if you need the ability to print color, you're more or less stuck with inkjets. I prefer inkjets from the early 2000's from HP, before they went to separate ink tanks and printheads. I love my 990C. Even though it's only a 3 color + black, it does really really well printing photos. Today's good inkjets have 7 and sometimes 8 colors. While this usually leads to superior color photos than 3color+black inkjets, you have to be using really really good paper to tell the difference. I use fairly "cheap" photo paper--250 sheets for $25, rather than some of the $1/sheet stuff that the mfr's sell.

I have plenty of experience with printers, especially those that print photos. I worked in a photo studio where I worked with an Epson 2200. And last summer, I worked in a research lab where I worked on a new method of maintaining color control in color laser printers. Our test printer was a top-of-the-line $10K color laser machine. It was lots of fun!
