It has been a decade since we did this and we are now in the process of updating our Wills etc.

This time though, we are doing the update ourselves because we have the previous documents and can either just lift the boilerplate and adjust the bequests or have the ability to correct actual flaws in the original Wills that were not captured by the legal firm who prepared them in 2011.

I always enjoys going back and seeing who did or did not get cut in for a share and now that there are marriages and great nephews etc. to consider, to factor this in as well.

A decade on, some of beneficiaries are at the stage in life where a bequest would be meaningless at their age and circumstance, so some like my siblings are only tagged for a nominal remembrance while the youngest are still kind of unknown entities to us because they are under 6 years of age and I could end up thinking they are unworthy to share in the leftovers.

So. I am not just leaving this to family I don't know or care about.

The best things I have come up with, other than our cats being the first named in the bequests, is to have the estate pay for a trip to our favourite home away from home in the US for the entire immediate family to spend 4 days there and to leave a portion of ashes.

The other thing is to sponsor a Requiem Mass or concert , as a Presbyterian this may seem strange, but I am making it a benefit to raise funds for a local charity. I am a sucker for Mozart's Requiem, Faure's Requiem or Berlioz's Requiem.

And then there are a number of other boiler plate favourite causes, such as the Torre Argentina cat sanctuary in Rome of schools of veterinary medicine for research into feline diseases.

But I need some other good suggestions. (I also have LGBTQ causes named).

Give me ideas and just as a kick in the pants, have you made out or updated your will yet?

I'm not ready for that level of adulting. Im super close to accepting my own mortality though. So, soon? I feel like acknowledging or preparing for your own death is when the child inside truly dies.

It's a long time since I updated my will, but I don't think that there are any changes I want to make. Even if my will were lost I would pretty much want it to go as the law already says it would go.

I've lived a full life. It's actually been pretty bitchin'. But now, regrettably, my life has been taken. Please bury me with all my stuff, because you know it's mine.

No fancy funeral for me, burn me and toss my ashes into the ocean that's all I ask. My mom & dad & brother & 2 sisters to get an equal share of my life insurance & anything else I own.

Why do you demand so much energy to be dedicated to your lifeless body?

... Because the ocean is my happy place, I'm nearly 28 and have been surfing since I was 5 years old and when my time comes I'd like my remains to go to my happy place.

Dble post.

^ I am all for this. I have to be ashes because part of me will be in Vermont and the other part with my cats on the farm here in Ontario.

So I just did a section today where the 20 most important people in my life will have have all their expenses paid to come to one of my favourite places in Vermont to celebrate our lives together. No service. Nothing but good food and drink and nature.

Better to be ashes than selfishly wasting a plot of land for eternity.

I guess I need to create a will for the future care of my boys.

^ Our cats are the first named in our will

A number of year ago, we helped a friend find a permanent home for 2 wonderful cats (we didn't take them because we had 5 at that point) with a loving family with 2 boys who had lost their cat a few months before and after we had them placed, their family was provided with $50,000 for their care..( they didn't know this going into the adoption)....and our cats are provided with unlimited (but accountable expenses) until they die...with their condition verified by a qualified independent Vet every 6 months.

Everyone else comes after our guys.

Please make provision for your cats ( or...sigh...your other animal companions...) in your Will.

They loved you unconditionally.

Unlike the other undeserving fuckers you have named in your Will.

One of these days I have to deal with the same thing. I had always left everything to my parents. Well Dad is gone and Mom is at an age where the money would not matter and it appears possible despite my best efforts I will out live her.

One guy I know left $10,000 each to a long list of friends - saying they were not to use it to pay bills or save it - it was to be spent on something fun. I am strongly considering doing something like that...
