Personally I would go LCD as I can hook my PC upto it too and I also heard that plasma screens can be noisy as I think they have a cooling fan.

In anycase make sure it is HDTV ready.

Do not buy a plasma TV. I have heard that the screen can go bad quite easily. Get a LCD or better yet buy a DLP TV for better contrast.

You did not say what size LCD or Plasma you want to buy. Plasm has taken over sizes bigger than 32 inches here. I too have heard varying stories as the are noisy and the screens do not last. Also if someone lives in a high elevation, plasma's don't work well or right. I would agree with others here, dpending on the size you want, go with LCD. I have a 32 inch SAMSUNG and I live it. Vibrant colors and 8 ms response...

I've read that plasma is better for over 40" and LCD is better for under 40". If you do a Google on LCD TV, it brings up a lot of articles on the subject. A lot of the particulars are over my head and don't mean much to me. Some of it depends on how you're going to use the TV. I just plug it in and have a DVD player connected to it, but many people use the TV as part of a home theater system.

Thanks guys
I now have a 29inch flat screen Philips TV. I was thinking of getting a 46 inch tv. I think I will get a 46" Sony or Philips LCD for the new year.(!)

Both are great for a home theatre application. However, you need to take into consideration whether or not you will use a game deck as plasma screens are susceptible to 'burn in.' LCD's are not. You may want to check out this link at Crutchfield on flat panel TVs.

The skinney on LCD vs. Plasma:

So here goes. Plasma came about several years ago because at the time there was no way of making consumer viable LCD screens at very large sizes, like 36", 42", 50+", etc... Plasma tends to be crisper and sharper in picture than LCD, and sometimes brighter. However, plasma screens are not built to last, they break down and fade over time. Their lifetime is about 3-5 years.

However, you will note when i said, "there was no way of making consumer viable LCD screens at very large sizes," i said WAS. This is not longer the case. Electronic's makers can now make LCD screens of all sizes. LCD screens are practically as close to Plasma screens in terms of brightness and crispness. Some even beat plasmas. LCD screens last longer, are not as susceptible to burn in as plasmas, and are generally the better option.

DLPs are of course the other option, but these are basicaly a new incarnation of the same old projection TV. They can be darker, harder to view at angles, and not as crisp in picture as LCDs or Plasmas.

The main thing you want to make sure is that your new TV is HD-ready. Meaning it can display images in AT LEAST 720p format, preferably you want a TV that can handle 1080i format as well. There seems to be a trend now of TV's only supporting HD in 720p format, and not 1080i, which is of higher quality. So the choice is up to you, but i'd go with a TC that can display up to 1080i.

720 x 486 = Standard NTSC 4:3 broadcast picture.
720 x 576 = Standard PAL 1:1 broadcast picture.
720 x 480i = EDTV or Standard Definition 4:3 interlaced picture.
720 x 480p = EDTV or Standard Definition 4:3 progressive scan picture.
1280 x 720i = HDTV, 16:9 interlaced picture.
1280 x 720p = HDTV, 16:9 progressive scan picture.
1920 x 1080i = HDTV, 16:9 interlaced picture.
1920 x 1080p = HDTV, 16:9 progressive scan picture.

I agree with several here: under 40" go with LCD, over 40" go with plasma. Plasma has a much better picture from the side angles and and much deeper blacks. Burn-in isn't a problem with modern plasmas.

Also, longevity issues have been settled with plasmas. Mine is rated at lasting over 10 years running something like 10-12 hours a day...hardly a longevity issue!

my 50 in hd dlp samsung wide screen wit all the bells and windows is on about 20 hrs a day. color perfect, picture fabulous, attractive design (mines the pedastal model. Best set i've ever had and i mean EVER.

funny, my tivo and several other electronic items are suddenly samsung and no problems w/anything somewhere i read they were very highly respected for product and performance. DLP i am convinced is the way to go and samsung is now my preferred brand...just my opinion of course.

Wow..thanks for the great information guys. Will study it further before making the final decision. You guys are really awesome....

plasma tv's are also very hot. that's not to say an lcd is cool. but, in a small room, a plasma tv can really heat up the area more so than a plasma. of course, depending on where you're from, u might prefer the extra heat. i myself am basking in the 78 hot degrees in my room at 11pm. time to lower the a/c some more.

I have a 42" Samsung plasma TV and its fine with me.

The danger with them (as opposed to LCD) is a thing I believe is called "plasma burn" which is when certain images can get burnt onto the screen when left for too long. The trick is not to keep channels that have permanent banners on the TV for more than 15 minutes at any time. eg Sky News, Fox News, etc.

FOX "News" will damage your brain long before it damages your screen.
:D

We just got a 37" LCD TV and we love it. I went with the AKAI model because the salesperson told me that they provide the equipment for the LG TVs... and it was about $300 cheaper than the LG 37" LCD TV. The pictures side-by-side looked identical. So far, so good...
