2008 will get an extra second to make up for the earth's slower rotational speed this year. Of course, if you’re running OS X and you’ve got your Mac pulling time from Apple’s time servers (that’s the default setting in the Date & Time preference pane), you’re taken care of. And if you’re on Windows, well, er, we'll let Microsoft explain:

Have a happy late new year boys:D

the kb article is most awesome. especially because they recognized that this is a german ip, and they don't have a german version of it. so they gave me a machine translated article. that's a very crule thing to do with any article .. and even worse with a technical article . ugh

I looked at the site and noticed this list.

* Windows Vista Home Basic
* Windows Vista Home Premium
* Windows Vista Enterprise
* Windows Vista Business
* Windows Vista Ultimate
* Windows Vista Starter

Then was really grateful I have Mac OSX Leopard, no upgrades, bigger versions, smaller versions, value editions or anything just Leopard, fully functioning same as all recent mac converts and a damn site cheaper than most editions of Vista.

Corny, as my last olive branch I will extend to you this year I have copied the M$ KB article. I'm sure somebody can figure out what they are saying.

When the Windows Time service is working as a Network Time Protocol (NTP) client
The Windows Time service does not indicate the value of the Leap Indicator when the Windows Time service receives a packet that includes a leap second. (The Leap Indicator indicates whether an impending leap second is to be inserted or deleted in the last minute of the current day.) Therefore, after the leap second occurs, the NTP client that is running Windows Time service is one second faster than the actual time. This difference is resolved at the next time synchronization.

When the Windows Time service is working as an NTP server
No method exists to include a leap second for the Windows Time service.

How a leap second is included depends on NTP server settings.

It would be interesting to see how the translator converted it from German to English. Couldn't be anymore confusing than msft:confused:

actually the english version isn't much better than the german translated one :D
they could have just said "time will be in sync after the next synchronisation after midnight". but nooo

Oh no! Windows doesn't recognize the leap second until the next time synchronization! What am I going to do?

Ok, so from which forgotten era did they steal the second this time to wind up the reels?

Thief of Time, anyone? ;-)

totally!

i say we should all switch back to the ancient mayan calendar. it's was exact ... down to the last second. ;) ;p

you all wanna know something really strange? the mayan calendar takes earth's orbital drifts into account.

it even takes the moon's, mercury's, venus' and mar's orbital drifts into account as well.

i don't know about you guys, but for me: for a civilization that date's back to before julius caesar; i would say that's pretty fascinating. ..|

Does anyone know what organization is responsible for regulating earth's time? That they can add leap seconds and stuff? That's cool!

That would be NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).

For us in engineering, they're like gods, since all measurements go back to NIST, and when we get a certificate of calibration, it has to be NIST traceable.

=/ I unfortunatly do not have enough harddrive space on my Windows partition to download any updates... >_>

Looks like I'll be stuck with OSX for a while... unless i can construct a time machine consisting of an intricate series of mirrors, sticky back plastic and a loo roll...
