NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top

0107_jay_conan_ex_tmz_01.jpg

Jay Leno is going back to his 11:30 PM time slot, and it's looking like Conan O'Brien is the odd man out ... sources tell TMZ.

We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.

Anyone still watch either show?
I watch Conan's show. He's pretty funny.

I just fail to understand the point of any of this. What was the point of Leno leaving the Tonight Show, replacing him with Conan, replacing Conan with Fallon, and giving Leno his own show at 10:00 PM if they were just gonna shift it all back to the way it was in the first place?

What a mess.

I'd replace them both with Dov Davidoff and Lewis Black.

Jay's okay but I prefer Conan's humor.

You're right none of it really made sense...Jay was #1 in the ratings but for some reason The Powers that Be thought Conan could bring in a younger crowd..Letterman is KICKING Conan's Ass Big-Time...

I feel sorry for Conan because he was comfortable and making a Great Living in his old spot...Now he's the odd-man-out...We'll see how this Drama un-folds....

They should just give Jimmy Fallon the boot. He isn't funny at all and his show is awful. While they're at it, give Carson the boot as well. Does anyone watch his show?

Jay lenno is on here at 6pm weekdays (free to air) and 7.30pm weekdays on cable...No body watches. All the other guys are on cable late at night and they have a pretty good cult following I think....

These reports are jumping the gun a bit. The real story is that NBC affiliates aren't happy with the ratings Jay is getting in his five days a week at 10 format and are re-evaluating whether they want to keep it that way. Nothing is official yet.

I'd say though that he's on his way back to 11:30 considering the president of NBC programming wants more pilots for next season. They need somewhere to air those pilots so....

This isn't official, it's all rumor right now. Even Leno himself does not believe the rumor is true. But what is official is that NBC is just a mess right now, suffering from a severe identity crisis.

Well, I happen to watch both Jay Leno and Conan.

I never watched Conan in the past, since he was on a later time. But now that he's on earlier, I find him very very funny! Like I actually laugh out loud... unlike Letterman, who's humor I don't find funny.

I agree that Fallon should be booted. I wanted to give him a chance, but stand-up and interviews aren't his thing. He's good at doing skits (like on SNL). Ever show I've seen, the audience always has an awkward laughter after Fallon's punch line.

One of life's biggest mysteries, to me, is why anyone ever tunes into Letterman....

The least funny man ever on late night TV.

Serves NBC right for screwing with their number 1 late night block in the first place.

NBC to Conan O'Brien -- The Choice Is Yours

0107_leno_conan_nbc_ex2.jpg

NBC has given Conan O'Brien the option to either do his show from midnight to 1 or leave the network, sources tell TMZ.

As TMZ first reported, after the Olympics, Jay Leno will get his 11:30 PM time period back. We're told network execs have told Conan they will let him decide if he wants the midnight to 1:00 AM time slot. If he does, Leno's show will only be a half hour. If Conan walks, Leno will get a full hour, informed sources tell TMZ.

Our sources say Conan has not decided what he wants. We do know he's pissed, because he was given no advanced warning this was coming. Conan's people told NBC they are considering the offer. Translation: Mr. O'Brien -- I have Rupert Murdoch on line one, Stephen McPherson on line two, John Landgraf on line three, Jeff Wachtel on line four ...

We're told if Conan gets another offer, even though NBC could block the move, they will let him go and give Leno the full hour.

Stay tuned...

What a mess.

The reason was in Conan's contract.

When he extended his contract with NBC a few years ago, one of the clauses was that he will take over the 11.30pm timeslot in 2009.
As such, Jay Leno was "forced" out of his time-slot.

They shifted Jay Leno to 10pm because an hour long talk-show is much cheaper to produce compared to an hour long drama series. As such, NBC executives thought that it'll be more commercially viable even if it might garner lower ratings. Also, they didn't want Jay Leno to move over to ABC (that was what the industry rumor was). After all, the 11.30pm time-slot is the only one that NBC consistently comes out tops. They didn't want to risk that.

All in all, this proves that NBC execs need to get shot.

In my view, Conan's problem is the 11:35 timeslot; his natural audience at that time is watching The Colbert Report.

I've always liked Conan, but I only end up watching by happenstance.

As a party of one, I like Jimmy. Jay is to pompous and expects you to laugh. Letterman is a better lover than laugher and Conan has his GOOD days but his complexion/coloring always make me feel like I'm attending his wake. jmho

Both Jay & Conan are nice Guys.........I Love Jay but I want Conan to get something out of the pile of shit they're throwing at him...NBC really FUCKED this one up...

Regardless of the outcome...My #1 Late Night show to catch when I can catch it is "Craig Furguson"...Craig has me rolling...Craig is probably the First Late night Host that makes me laugh every time I watch him..

And the Fact that he's Tall & Nice looking is a PLUS...

I watched about 3 min. of Leno's monologue tonight, and in that short time I found out that he is still making "Brokeback Mountain" jokes !

How many years has it been ?

To hell with Leno. He's got enough money, I wish he'd just go away.
