Lil Wayne becomes the first artist since 50 Cent in 2005 to sell more than 1 million copies of an album in a single week, according to chart reports by Nielsen SoundScan.

In its first week on the market, "Tha Carter III" sells just over 1 million units. The last album to top that milestone was 50 Cent's "The Massacre" in March 2005.

No album in 2006 sold as many as 800,000 copies in a single frame, and the largest sales week since "The Massacre" belonged to Kanye West's "Graduation," which netted an opener of 957,000 copies last year when it hit stores on Sept. 11.

Lil Wayne first appeared on The Billboard 200 in 1999. His previous biggest sales week was a 238,000-unit start for "Tha Carter II" in 2005. That set entered The Billboard 200 at No. 2 while becoming his fourth No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

well, the album IS pretty damn good.
to think there are so many people (myself included) that haven't actually bought a copy yet.

I don't know what it is about him but I just can't get into him the way everyone else is. "Lollipop" is a good song even though it's annoyingly over played at this point but he just annoys me. His voice and the way he raps.

i used to really hate him too, but the new album is undeniable. it's just really good. and his rhymes are so fun.

Plus one, plan on getting it this weekend. I'm kinda not surprised though, everyone's been talking about it for a while now

It just seems like so many people just jump on the bandwagon for whatever the flavor of the moment may be. Not saying he isn't talented but most people who didn't even listen to his music before he had mainstream pop success are now praising him for being the "best rapper alive".

I still don't understand the hype.

What else is new? I've been listening to Lil' Wayne since he first debuted with Juvenile. While he has and had nice rhymes, I never would have thought to have put him with the best.

I'm not a fan of his, and I agree that this is bandwagon thing, but he's been in the business for a while and has done so many guest appearances and worked really hard so it's good for him that his album did so well.

I saw a clip on youtube for his fans and he was telling him he owes all of his success to his fans and that he was so happy that they all bought the album, so at least he acknowledges them. I haven't seen that stupid fuck 50 Cent do that.

I am surprised it sold so many copies so early!
Grabbed it, myself... gotta say, I ain't THAT impressed with the material on there.
Heard him on much better stuff, before Carter III.
