Which do you prefer?

I used to live in the country when I loved in Georgia and I loved it. It was peaceful and he people are different there. They are friendlier and everyone knows everyone else for the most part. We lived near a big farm area that my aunt owned and people would rent the property to raise cattle at one point. There was also a lake nearby.

I think I'd prefer to live in the country but close to a big city within a 30 min driving range.

i moved to the country in 1976....loved it

i moved back to the burbs in 2001 to take care of my Mom for a couple of years until she passed away....i'm still in that house

it's a nice house....4 bedrooms, big fenced yard for my dog....but...

i miss living in the country....bonfires every weeekend, walking outside naked, hunting out the back door (squirrel, rabbit, deer, birds, etc...all for food should i say)...

i'm real close to moving back to the country.....i've had it in town...but it should be close enough to access the things available in town (shopping, clubs, entertainment, arts, etc)

I grew up in the country. I feel ok in cites but I like being able to be alone. God that sounds depressing.

What would be a combination of a big city and country, Port-au-Prince?

I wouldn't recommend Port-au-Prince. I think combination means you either live in one or the other but in close proximity to the other. And the city does not have to be big to have lots of conveniences.
Oh I think I get it: you mean like living in Haringey? (which is totally country, but since you can see The City flattened against the horizon, you can fancy yourself as actually living in London).

Haringey totally country? You are joking? It's a moderately squalid part of London.

Something like that. You can get the city conveniences easily and still feel like you live in the country. A nice budget helps.
So, again, it's impossible a combination of both. The natural park of Collserola is Barcelona proper, for all its wildlife, trekking paths and even hogs approaching trash cans. And the other side of the mountains is only country proper only as far as the rail an the highways don't reach there.

Disclaimer: if belamy had a favorite city, that would be something like London.

Which means a moribund part of London.
It's funny to observe how Londoners are so fond of the country that they would assimilate this Haringey_from_Alexandra_Palace.jpgto the concept of "big city", while the Parisians are so fond of the country that they would vehemently oppose considering Saint-Cloud a genuine part of Paris http://www.demeures-de-charme.com/photos/123A63.jpg

I live in a small city, I like the fact that the country is very close, and that it has a lot of the conveniences of a city, yet it's not crazy expensive

I hate the fact that there are not a lot of choices, and that the weather sucks!

I would like to live in a bigger city, but I don't know if I could afford it.

I had always thought that Barcelona was a small city until I saw what some "big cities" look like, particularly in Europe and North America.

Anywhere as long as there are everything you need and want.

Country normal don't have everything you need and want.

I've spent some time in both coastal and remote inland farming areas. I prefer living by the sea, there's that extra dimension of being able to sail.

Currently, I live inland, in an urban connurbation but within walking distance to a National Trust house where we spent time enjoying the wide expanse of grass and the big duck pond where the bairn feeds the waterfowl. We went for a picnic there today, and it's agreeable right now.

I guess living in the suburbs is a combination of both worlds.

Yes, a very shitty combination, with neither the true convenience and social opportunity of the city, nor the open spaces and slow pace of the country.

you're also not completely cut off from civilization.

As long as you've got your car. And fifteen minutes to drive through that sea of houses. And consider the sprawling clusterfuck of shopping centres, car lots and chain-restaurants "civilization."

As for me, I prefer the country, but both city and country can be very good places to live--the suburbs were an attempt to eliminate the negative aspects of both, and in doing so they eliminated the positives and kept most of the negatives. (There are some fantastic articles/essays on this topic that do a better job of explaining than I do...)

privacy and intimacy of the country w/in an hour of a city...used to walk around outside naked and swim et cetera w/o wondering if the fucking neighbors were going to complain or get loud and obnoxious or just be pests.

I voted city. I do like the country, but I'd prefer to spend most of my time out of it (at least in my area.)

To me: living in the countryside of arizona means living with institutionalized racism and blatant corruption.

Atleast in the city, they have the decency to appear appalled at those notions. ;)
